The Greatest Video Games - Revisited [Castlevania SOTN]
Side scrollers 4 life!

SHAFT!

Released by Konami for the Sony Playstation in 1997, the game was a total flop compared to the previous games in the series. This was mostly due to a lack of advertising and because at the time consumers were only interested in the phenomenon of 3D games. Symphony of the Night was one of the last 2D platforms released on the playstation for this very reason. The game had a strong cult following and sales actually rebounded when it was eventually released as a greatest hits game years later, but it is still remembered as being a large financial disappointment.

Castlevania SOTN
Graphics: 7
Obviously the graphics seem dated now considering the amazing visuals sported by todays gaming consoles, but at the time these graphics were about as pretty as they come. One aspect of the graphics I found particularly enticing was the incredible variance as you travel from area to area in the castle. Youll never become bored by the graphics. You almost never run into the same enemy or terrain. All the bosses are very unique as well.
Playability: 10
As I reminisce about my days of playing the crap out of this game, I cant really think of a single complaint about the playability. The games controls, reaction, and response are absolutely flawless. Every creature you can morph into has unique movement and controls. I dont remember ever getting pissed off because I couldnt get one of the spells to work. Youd have to play the game yourself to understand what I mean.
Fun Factor: 10
This is the best 2D platform game Ive ever playedperiod. I would say it is the best game Ive ever played, but I cant make a statement like that since it is too difficult to compare it to games of other genres. However, Im not going to say it isnt, because it very well could be. The game is simply amazing. You wouldnt think it had much replay value until you discover that the largest video game secret in video game history and find out youre only 50% done with the game.
