Sundsvall December Photos of Sundsvall and the people in it over the month of December.
Vemdalen Ski Resort The exchange students went to Vemdalen in early December. These are a few photos from the trip.
Thanksgiving 2000 Six of the exchange students came together at Emilie's apartment to have a mini-Thanksgiving. We couldn't find Turkey though so we had chicken instead :) But we did manage to have Pumpkin Pie because of my mom's care package and Pecan Pie because of Emilie's care package (Yay, teamwork)!

From November 30th to December 5th we were in Italy. We spent 2 days in Rome, 2 in Perugia, 1 in Firenze, and the last one was in the airport!

Rome, Italy (Roma, Italia) We spent two harrowing days in Rome, running full speed through every monument, cathedral, and museum we could.. We knew then as we know now that two days was nowhere near enough time to see Rome. Thus, we will come back again and take a more leisurely tour.
Perugia, Italy We stayed at the home of Tania Pedini with her wonderful family in the town of Perugia. These are photos from Perugia, including the underground tunnels they use to get around town that are over 1000 years old..
Florence, Italy (Firenze, Italia) On Monday the 4th we went to Florence with Fabio.. Which means that we did not get to see Michaelangelo's David because apparently it's common for museums to be closed on mondays. However, we did see many really cool places so check it out!
Our tour of Italy. This is a short email about our trip to Italy and the trip to Vemdalen ski resort that came directly afterward.. If you're interested, check it out.

Lightbulb and jumping teapot in 3DSMax. In my Interactive MultiMedia class we're learning how to use 3D Studio Max, a 3d rendering program. Here are the results of my first attempts at learning it.

We recently went to England for four days, and afterward Stockholm Sweden for three days. Below are the photos from the trip. Skansen is a zoo in Stockholm; Vasa is a museum devoted to a 17th century warship in Stockholm; Buckingham Palace, Globe Theatre, Tower of London, and Big Ben are self explanatory; Henge includes photos of both Stone Henge in the Salisbury plains as well as Avebury Henge, the largest henge in Europe ("Henge" actually refers to the circular ditch and the stones are added afterward); Old Sarum is the ruins of a villiage and fortress.

HALLOWEEN 2000! The Halloween party this year was really cool. We took a million photos, so if you managed to keep yourself out of them all, you're either really good, or you simply weren't there! It started at 9:00 and I finally had to "eighty-six" about 10 people at 4:30AM! There's a few pictures at the end of the next morning (cleaning day!); the first snow of the season.

Manuel's Birthday Party! My roommate Manuel had his birthday recently and he made a bunch of really crazy pizza for us.. anyway, here are all the photos from that!

Celine de Waele & Gabriel Cooper Subtitled and on TV 16 Oct 2000 A friend of mine, Celine (from Belgium), and I were on Swedish TV (for about 95 seconds) talking about studies here in Sweden.. The guy in the first photo is Mitthögskolan's Head Master. Anyway, as I don't have a VCR and I couldn't have taken the tape home anyway, I resorted to taking photos of the television while the show was airing.. Some of the photos have readable Swedish subtitles! (Oooo, Ahhhh..)

image110 says at the bottom "but here it's the student's own studies which are important." image111 says something about how mitthögskolan should in my opinion have some "low maintenance" classes in english, so that if we missed one or two classes it'd be ok, but either way it was a stupid statement because that's already the way it's set up. Like i said in 110, the classes here rely almost entirely upon your own studies. The teachers seem to be there only to reenforce what you've taught youself. image112 says something about "and studies seem to be different.." (something like that anyway!). Finally, image113 says "but here, exactly as gabriel says, one must do more one's self"

People these are a few random photos I couldn't group anywhere else. One is in the swedish class and some are in my apartment during dinner creation time. :)

Cat Emilie found a cat outside her apartment and loved and squeezed it and called it 'george.' (Most of you won't get that joke, but it's not worth explaining!)

'Skuleberg' 17 Sept 2000 The exchange students got together from the different campuses and went to a mountain called Skuleberg. There we participated in several teamwork exercizes in the forest and climbed the mountain. Good-Clean-Fun was had by all.

'Mitthögskolan' The university I'm studying at for the fall semester of 2000.

'Festarna' Photos from the parties we've had here in Sundsvall over the last month, including one that the swedish students put together for us..

Sundsvall Oct 2000 Photos of the city of Sundsvall, Sweden that have been taken over the last month.

Matförs Oct 2000 Several of the exchange students went on a walk through the Swedish nature trails between a town called Matförs back to Nacksta, an area in Sundsvall. The walk was about 25 km or roughly 15 miles and took us from 10AM to about 7PM.. By the way, the massive mound Emilie is standing next to is an ant hill..

Fabio and Tanias Farewell Party 28 Sept 2000 Due to problems between their university and Mid-Sweden University, Fabio Palmiotto and Tania Pedini chose to go back to Italy so they wouldnt be set behind a year in their studies. (Their university in Italy would not confirm whether or not it would accept the exams Fabio and Tania were going to take at Mitthögskolan.)

Gabe's Apartment in Sundsvall 16 Sept 2000 Some photos of the apartment here in Sundsvall.. The poster is from a fashion shop here in town. Celine, a Belgian exchange student here pestered the shop personnel into giving her a bunch of their posters.. Obviously it worked!

'Mitthögskolan i Sundsvall' 5 Sept 2000 We took a trip to Mitthögskolan (Mid Sweden University) at Sundsvall (where I am now). These are photos of the campus here. Most of the campus was built in 1995 - 1997 so everything here is brand new and untarnished. there are two bridges that lead one to the campus, each was designed by a student. One is styled after the Golden Gate, the other like asian bridges and are supposed to give on the feeling of larger bridges. There's art everywhere in the school, and much of the campus is architecturally unique. The plants inside the buildings are watered by rain water (regulated), and when it rains, pipes bring water in to the main meeting areas to create temporary streams.. rather fascinating, I think. I'll take more soon and post them.

'kurs' 5 Sept 2000 here is a picture or two of almost the entire group of students at the intensive language course in Härnösand. Gu and Kazuki were eating lunch with a Swedish host family and couldn't be there for the photo.

'MedKyrko' 5 Sept 2000 While staying the weekend with a local family, we passed by a rather old church -- originally built in the 12th century, rebuilt in the 15th century, and again in the early 20th century. these are the photos from there.

'Sodra Berget' 5 Sept 2000Photos from the top of Sodra Berget, a mini mountain near the old church mentioned above. we went twice. once with our swedish friends that hosted us for the weekend (this link), and once to a different part of the mountain for a nature hike with the intensive language course.

'Thailansk Paviljon' 5 Sept 2000 In the middle of a bunch of farms there lies a small pavilion in memorial of the Thai King Chulalonghorn. These are photos from there. The gold in-lays are all 24 karat, except for the topmost piece, which is 18 karat.

'bondgarden' 5 Sept 2000We took a few pictures of the farm we stayed at and the family that hosted us.

Family and Friends 10 Augusti 2000 Hej! Jag är i Härnösand Sverige nu! I am studying Svenska in a 3 week crash course until September 1st. I left from Nashville, Tennessee USA on 10 Augusti 2000 6:45 pm and I arrived in Härnösand 1:00 am 12 Augusti 2000 after missing a flight from Amsterdam to Stockholm (a 23 hr trip). These are photos of mine and Emilie's family and friends who came to see us off. Thanks for the wonderful send off! We could not have been in better spirits!

Airplane 10 & 11 Augusti 2000 The sky was absolutely beatiful during our flight. Here are pictures of clouds and the sunset in Sweden from the plane. Take a look at Image077.jpg for a cloud that looks like a dragon head and Image078.jpg for a beautiful sunset. Image075.jpg is of me on the plane and Image070.jpg is of Emilie.

Apartment and Roommates 12 Augusti thru 1 September 2000 In Härnösand, Emilie and I share an apartment in a building called Vita Lyan with Tania and Fabio from Perugia, Italy. We are located about 3 blocks from the bay and can see it out our back window. Here are images from inside the apartment, out our back window, of the building (Image088.jpg), and of our roommates. Image108.jpg has Tania on the left and Jennifer on the right. Jennifer is the only other American taking part in the program. She hails from Southern California.

Härnösand 12 Augusti thru 1 September 2000 These are pictures of the city I stayed in during the intensive language course. It was founded in the late 1500s and at that time, it was the farthest city north in the country. It has burned 3 times but has prevailed. Located mostly on an island called Härnond, the city it very beautiful. Here you can see various pictures of it. More will be added as we take them. Image098.jpg and Image099.jpg were taken of the sky as a huge storm was coming. It turned out to not be as fearsome as it appeared! For Emilie's little sisters, Image083.jpg is an image of McDonalds. They even have them over here!

Boda Borg 19 Augusti 2000 On Saturday (lördag) 19 Augusti 2000 the Intensive Language Course traveled into the center of Sverige to visit Boda Borg. This is an old mental hospital (hehehe) that they have converted into an adventure house. Here you pick a green, red, or black course (green being physically easiest and black being the hardest) and go inside the first room to complete a task. In most cases you do not know the task. You must figure it out by trial and error....more error than success! Once you complete it correctly you may go to the next room in the course. There are anywhere from 3 to 6 rooms in each course. If you fail, you must start the course over from the beginning. Groups of 3 or 4 people were formed and we all had a wonderful time. My group was able to complete 5 courses (the most of all in our group ;) ). Emilie's group complete 3 (also admirable!).

Out for Pizza 19 Augusti 2000 After Boda Borg, we were all very tired. A few of us decided that it would be better to go out to eat than to stay home and mess with cooking! Jennifer, Manuel, Emilie, and I all went to TacoBar for Pizza and Kebab. Kebab in Sverige is like Greek gyros and their Pizza (for ONE person) is the size of a medium pizza in the states, only extremely thin! It was very good, and for Emilie and I, the first time we had been out to a restaurant to eat in Sverige. We hope to remedy that soon though!

Härnösand Nature 12 Augusti thru 1 September 2000 Härnösand and all of Sverige is covered in beautiful green forests and water that is incredibly blue -- rivers or the sea seem to be close no matter where you go. There is a law in Sverige that it is your right to wander anywhere you like and pick berries and fruit (as long as its not private property ;) ). Most of these images were taken 20 Augusti 2000 when Emilie and I went blueberry and rasberry picking in the forrest by the sea.

Party Photos 20 Augusti 2000 Almost all of the members of the Svenska course (20 people) got together for a International Dinner Party. Menu consisted of Japanese fried rice, German beef cakes, Austrian Pasta, Italien pasta with cream and salmon, German Tsatzaziki, Spanish tortilla, French crepes, German tomato soup, and fruit (grapes and red currant). It was delicious! Organized by our German friend Esther, Decorated by our creative Austrian friend Doris, and helped out by all.

Gabriel and Emilie 12 Augusti thru September 1 2000 Here are just random photos of Emilie and I as we enjoy our stay in Härnösand. Tack!

06 August 2000 These are photos from a recent family lunch at mom's (now former) house. Let me know if you want larger versions of the photos and I'll upload them at earliest convenience. :)
