| FRONT KONTRA L-GOLF KORS Press Release 23/5/04 Support for Front Against the Golf Course Increases In a press release the Front Against the Golf Course welcomed the endorsement of Front Insalvaw Wied il-Garnaw and the Third World Group. Both organisations have declared that they are supporting the Front in its mission to safeguard agricultural land at Verdala from being developed into a golf course. The Front Against the Golf Course said "The support of these two organisations keeps confirming that there is widespread opposition around Malta to the development of a golf course at Verdala. This is very encouraging to the agricultural community at Verdala, especially after the fact that the Rabat Local Council has also formally opposed the proposed development of a Golf Course at Verdala." "The Front Against the Golf Course reminds the public that a large number of local organizations have declared publicly that they are against the project. These include the Progressive Farmers Union, Din l-Art Helwa, the Jesuit Province in Malta, Friends of the Earth (Malta), Nature Trust, Moviment Graffitti, Alternattiva Demokratika, the Malta Labour Party, Inizjamed, Move! Organisation, Zminijietna, Alternattiva Demokratika Zghazagh, International Animal Rescue, Azzjoni Pozittiva, Vegetarian Society, Pembroke Residents Association, University Chaplaincy, Malta Organic Agriculture Movement, Kopin, and Farmers' Central Co-Operative Society. Various opinion makers, including exponents of the Nationalist Party are also opposing the proposed development. Besides, it is important to note that the Archbishop, and the Church weekly Il-Gens Illum are also opposing the project. " "Numerous qualified experts have expressed their major concerns about potential and serious environmental impacts of this project, whilst its economic viability and sustainability are certainly not established by the speculative figures and technically invalid assumptions set out in the developer's EIA (Environment Impact Assessment). "The Front also reminds the public that the proposed development clearly violates both Malta's Structure Plan and the Agreement between the Maltese Government and the Holy See. We urge board members of MEPA take note of these facts when voting on the proposed development." Mike Briguglio f/ Front Kontra l-Golf Kors |
