| Press Release 22/09/04 Front Kontra l-Golf Kors welcomes MEPA Decision The Front Kontra l-Golf Kors welcomed the MEPA Board decision to refuse the application for a golf course at Tal-Virtu Rabat and applauds its Directorate for highlighting the many serious issues which were going to have a major negative impact on the site and its surroundings. Members of the Front based their objections to this project on grounds of unsustainability, infringement of Structure Plan policies and the Church State Agreement; loss of farmland and habitats, freshwater pollution and over-extraction of water, landscape disruption and social and cultural issues. Taking such a huge chunk of our extremely limited land to convert it mostly to just one single use, with no suitable data to justify it economically, is an idea which runs counter to all the talk of environmental sustainability which our country should have been acting upon for years. The Front Kontra l-Golf Kors, a broad alliance of over 20 organisations, enjoys the support of many members of the public. The FRONT acted in the interests of the country as it is convinced that Malta can only improve its situation by offering a distinct and unique product and the best way of doing this is to embrace concepts of sustainable tourism which aims to encompass both the needs of the community and the protection of the environment - that which ultimately is the sole most important product we have to offer. |
