Moviment Graffitti on Golf Course Development

The granting of permission for the development of a golf course in Verdala would be a dangerous precedent, destroying Verdalas agricultural community and putting at risk farmers and agricultural land in Malta and Gozo, as this would pave the way for golf course development on agricultural land, said Moviment Graffitti, in reply to some recent statements in favour of golf course development.

Given that the Verdala Golf Course proposal shall destroy agricultural land, it should be rejected outright by MEPA. Indeed, the proposal violates Structure Plan Policy TOU 12, which states Any golf courses should be located where: 1. It can be accommodated without adverse environmental impact or loss of good quality agricultural land

The Verdala Golf Course proposal also violates the agreement between the Maltese Government and the Vatican, and therefore has no support from the Church. Besides, almost all Verdala farmers had declared their opposition to the golf course proposal to the Prime Minister and MEPA. The farmers enjoy the support of at least 18 agricultural, social, environmental, cultural, religious and political organisations in their opposition to the project and support for Maltas agriculture.

Moviment Graffitti concluded, The development of golf courses in Malta and Gozo is not sustainable. Such development would be detrimental to scarce resources in Malta and Gozo, as it results in loss of land, environmental damage and excess usage of water.
