Libel case
Local businessman Angelo Xuereb yesterday filed a libel suit against The Malta Independent on Sunday writer Gillian Bartolo.
The suit was filed after Mr Xuereb, a director of Royal Hotels Limited, claimed an article written by Mrs Bartolo was untrue.The article, �More land down the hole?�, was published on 22 April and claimed that a number of farmers were pressurised to leave the land they worked in the limits of Rabat. Some were also prepared to swear under oath that their signatures were falsified, the article continued.Mr Xuereb said his company was developing an area, mentioned in the article, as a golf course. The article, he said, made certain innuendoes and implications which portrayed him in a negative light and damaged his reputation.He asked the court to award him compensation for the damages he suffered as a result of the article.Dr Patrick Galea and legal procurator Sharon Mizzi signed the writ on behalf of the plaintiff. |
