| MEDIA RELEASE 12/08/02 FRONT KONTRA L-GOLF COURSE WELCOMES BISHOPS' PASTORAL LETTER The Front Kontra l-Golf Course welcomed the pastoral letter issued by the Maltese Bishops on the occassion of the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. The Bishops highlighted the agreement between the Government of Malta and the Vatican regarding the transfer of property to the Government. Such property includes the area in Tal-Virtu' which AX Holdings wants to develop into a golf course. The Front Kontra l-Golf Course said "Through their pastoral letter the Bishops are reminding that the property transferred to the Maltese Government is to be used to promote the safeguarding of the environment and the development of agriculture, and to meet the country's most pressing social requirements, such as social housing and public utilities, as well as for humanitarian, educational and cultural purposes. By no stretch of the imagination could the development of a golf course on the agricultural land at Tal-Virtu' be considered to conform to the agreement in question. This was confirmed publicly a few weeks ago by the Apostolic Nuncio. Therefore, the proposed development violates Malta's laws. It also violates Malta's structure plan, which MEPA has the duty to observe." "The Front Kontra l-Golf Course fully agrees with the Bishops that the authorities have a serious responsibility to consider not only the economic development but also the social development of the community, which should always include the protection of health and life, and also safeguard and respect the natural environment. We therefore urge the board of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to respect the plight of 90 farmers at Tal-Virtu' who are making it clear that they oppose the devleopment of a golf course."
