HSC MALTESE GRADUATES FROM SATURDAY SCHOOL OF COMMUNITY LANGUAGES SEVEN HILLS TOP THE STATE
In NSW in 2008, there were five NSW Higher School Certificate Candidates for Maltese Continuers (NSW Board of Studies), and all five students were from the Saturday School of Community Language Class at Seven Hills High School campus. I am so proud of them says Charles Galea, their teacher. Of the five, two were awarded band six (Jane Borg taking the Premiers Award) and two at band five. He is a very good teacher said Jane Borg, who sat the exams with her husband Joseph last year, along with three others. His teaching methods really inspire and assist students to not just make it through the exams, which are challenging but achievable, but also actually speak Maltesewell she said. Jane and Charles are both founding members of Akkademja Maltija ta NSW Inc. (Academy of Maltese for NSW), with Jane being the President and Charles the HSC Coordinator.
This not for profit group of educators are seeking to promote and further develop the opportunities and choices for young Australians of Maltese origin to gain language and cultural literacy and a better understanding of who they are and find ways and pathways to be part of this meaningful experience.
This is amazing, to have this interest in the language amongst the young, I am fully supportive of this move to bring more Australians of Maltese origin to the SSCL he said. Charles said he was also supporting the teacher of a new SSCL in Wollongong's Smith Hill campus, Emmanuel Fenech, also from the Akkademja, which builds the numbers of Maltese language students in NSW and opportunities for interested young people. Jane said she was too, amazed and delighted at the level of success of the students, given that many travel large distances and have many demands on their time on Saturdays. "Doing HSC Maltese to adult levels for high school aged children and young adults through to the NSW HSC, is very valuable as many do well and achieve marks which improve their chances for university entrance as a result. "
Additionally, it is now widely recognised that learning any 2nd language increases thinking ability, but learning your heritage or community language builds your self esteem and confidence as well; a winning combination in a fast paced society like ours" she said. "I am very happy with the success of our students and hope to continue giving this service to the Maltese community in Sydney. Congratulations to all the HSC graduates for 2008, bravi and keep going, you are making us proud of your achievements and sheer will to learn" Charles said.

The Principal, Jane Borg. Teaching and Learning Course Coordinator, Cynthia Villar and Organisation Development & Secretary, Rhonda Balzan Bastow, recognised a growing unmet need.

A NEW SCHOOL FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA
With the initiative of the President, Mr. Jim Plowman, the secretary Judy Pavia and the delegate Gerry Pule' the Maltese Association of Western Australia will be establishing a new Maltese School at their new and beautiful community centre.
A qualified teacher, Mrs Maria Formosa, has already been approached and Mrs Formosa is willing to commence Maltese classes in August. On behalf of all the delegates and Maltese schools of Australia I welcome the new school and wish the committee of the Association every success in this new venture.
The Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi and Mrs Catherine Gonzi visited Australia from the 28 July to 12 August 2007. During his visit, the Prime Minister met members of the Maltese Community in Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia, Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales.   HARSIEN TAL-ILSIEN MALTI F'VICTORIA
Ftit ilu l-Ghaqda Storika Maltija ta' Melbourne organizzaw Language Immersion Morning. L-ghan ta' dan l- avveniment kien biex l-istudenti jinhargu mill-ambjent ta' klassi fl-iskola u jippartecipaw f'attivitajiet li jaghlmuhom fuq il-kultura u l-istorja ta' Malta. Dawn l-attivitajiet huma mmexxija kemm jista' jkun bil-lingwa Maltija biex l-istudenti jisimghu l-Malti mitkellem.

L-istudenti li jitghallmu l-Malti fi Brimbank College, fergha tal-Victoria School of Languages u l-Maltese Community Council ta' Victoria iltaqghu kollha fic-Centru Malti ta' Parkville. Il-kumitat ta' l-Ghaqda Storika hejja attivita' skond l-eta' ta' l- istudenti. L-istudenti żgħar raw u taghlmu fuq il-kostumi ta' l-antik imbaghad libsu pupi tal-kartun. Wara hadu sehem fil-loghob tat-tfal ta' l-antik bhal passju, ic-cirku, kant u rimi popolari Maltin. L-istudenti l-kbar hadu sehem f-"writing workshop' fil-lingwa Maltija, diskussjoni fuq Hagar Qim, il-Piramidi min kien l- ewwel u tahdita fuq s-sehem li kellha Malta waqt it-tieni gwerra dinjija. Kienu tlett sieghat b'hafna attivitajiet ta' siwi u dehen lill-Ghaqda Storika li organizzathom.

Meta l-Prim Ministru ta' Malta Dr Lawrence Gonzi u martu kienu f'Melbourne dawn l-ahhar attendew ghal din l-attivita'.

It-tagħlim tal-lingwa Maltija f’NSW qiegħed dejjem ikompli miexi ‘l quddiem. Għalkemm waqt iż-żjara tal-Prim Ministru Gonzi f’NSW xi għalliema iddeċidew li jiftħu xi żewġ klassijiet għar- rashom, l-iskola mmexxija mill-Maltese Community Council of NSW iktar ħadet spinta ‘l quddiem għax issa jidher li l- aċċent hu iktar fuq l-istudenti u mhux fuq l-għalliema.
Il-MCC sa anke offrew term mingħajr ħlas għax ħassew li l- istudenti għandhom jibbenefikaw mill- għaqal amministrattiv ta’ qabel fejn daħlu l-finanzi.

Għas-sena l-ġdida ħabbru ukoll rati ferm irħas milli qatt kien hawn f’NSW. F’dan ir-ritratt jidhru studenti (u xi għalliema) fil-klassijiet li jsiru f’Horsley Park. Għalkemm mhux l-istudenti kollha jidhru f’dan    ir-ritratt    iżda    bla    dubju    hu dehra li tqawwilek qalbek fejn jidħol it- tagħlim tal-lingwa Maltija. Kulħadd qiegħed   jistenna  l-inizjattivi  mwiegħda mill-Prim Ministru dwar it-tagħlim tal- Malti fl-Awstralja li ġew imħabbra waqt iż-żjara ta’ Dr Gonzi..
