Where the northern seas penetrate deep into the Martian landmasses we find one of the most densely populated regions on the planet, as well as the biggest city, Athena (four million inhabitants) Especially the lower areas below the Tropic of Pisces are blessed with a pleasant mediterranean climate, although the area is also notorious for it's sudden changes in temperature. In summer winds from the Argyre region on the southern hemisphere (where it's winter at that time) can bring cold weather and even snow storms quite far north, so always take a wintercoat with you if you go surfing. In winter the reverse effect can be responsable for a day on the beach in the middle of a chilly period.
Some topographic names are a reminder that this was a region of special interest for the early robotic explorers. In 1976 Viking 1 made the first succesfull landing on Mars in Chryse Platinia (present day Viking Bay) and in 1997 Pathfinder touched down in Ares Valles. Nowadays both locations are under water, but the space craft have been relocated to sites near New LA and Sagan. In the north of East-Acidalia is another place that captured the imagination of our ancestors: a rock formation that under certain light conditions resembles a human face. Just like the nearby "pyramids" it's now an island, but still a major tourist attraction.
The Lunea region is the main rice-producing area on the planet. The paddy craters around Gandhigarh are definitely worth a visit. An event not to be missed is the annual round-the-world-regatta, starting every  first of  Idanon in Benbova.
