MUKWONAGO - Merl C. Vollmer, 81, of Mukwonago, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Heartland Health Care in Pewaukee. He was born July 4, 1921, in Mukwonago, to Herman and Augusta (nee Last) Vollmer. Merl married Rachel Ann Edwards on June 1, 1946; she preceded him in death Nov. 9, 1970. On May 15, 1971, he married his second wife, Barbara Schafer.
Merl served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theater from 1941 to 1946. He was co-owner and operator of Vollmer Brothers Garage in Mukwonago until 1979, when he became self-employed. Merl served on the board of trustees and taught Sunday school at Waukesha Bible Church.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Richard (Janice) of Mount Calvary and Mary Sue (Imants) Strautin of Mount Olive, N.C.; his grandchildren, James, Dennis, Cheryl, Jennifer and Joseph Vollmer and Benjamin and Elizabeth Strautin; and his sister, Irma Jolliffe of Eagle. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sisters, William, Viola, Gordon, Clarence, Alice, Laura, Gladys and Roy; and his first wife, Rachel Ann.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. today, Oct. 28, at the Schmidt & Bartelt- Van Valin Funeral Home, 315 Main St., Mukwonago. A second visitation will be held from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Waukesha Bible Church, S53-W24079 Glendale Road, Waukesha; the Rev. Tom Hocking officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery in Wales.
Memorials to Waukesha Bible Church are appreciated.
