I had been pretty hyped for this film until quite recently, when I started hearing bad reviews (Film 2006 in particular completely slated it). Still, there were plenty of other reviews that were very positive, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. In the end, I have to say that I wasn't particularly thrilled by it. It had good parts, but through too much of it I was slightly bored. It starts off pretty strongly, but after everything is established I found that it just got completely bogged down, only picking up again over half way through, once Natalie Portman gets her well-publicised haircut. By then though I thought it was a little too late, as I had lost quite a bit of interest. I found the film was strangely uninspiring visually, but the biggest bone to pick for me was the acting. Portman was fine, except her distracting accent, and Hugo Weaving as the masked V was very good, but I thought that most of the supporting actors (predominantly British TV actors) were pretty poor. Having said that, a lot of the time it was probably the script that was at fault, stuffed with jarring stereotypical Brit-isms ("bloody hell", "bollocks", etc), making it clear that it's written by Americans. Certain set-pieces were effective, however, and the film did raise some interesting political issues.
The summary
Surprisingly drab visually and generally dull overall. A disappointment.
