I'm a big fan of Jack Black, and I think just his personality makes him one of the funniest guys in the business right now (I also think his "serious" turn in Peter Jackson's King Kong is really underrated). This new film, starring Black and his bandmate Kyle Gass, is absolutely tailor made for him (and indeed, by him, as he co-wrote it) as it lets him completely off the leash. As you would expect, he's extremely entertaining, as is the film itself. It's pretty unique but reminded me of a more surreal Wayne's World or a less time-travelling Bill and Ted. To some extent, as it's basically the origin story of the band, it's a musical, and I thought most of the new songs were great. They work really well in the movie, anyway, with some lyrics that are pretty hilarious in context with the images. After a really entertaining opening number, I found that the film took a little while to find its feet as it had to establish things. Once it did, it just kept getting more and more entertaining, and the last 30 minutes or so is brilliant. I can see the film becoming a real cult favourite in the years to come. I can't resist saying this: it rocks.
The summary
Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny is really really ridiculously good fun, once it gets into gear.
