Silent Hill contains some of the sickest, most disturbing imagery that I've ever seen in a film. It doesn't pull any punches! Whether this is a good thing depends on the viewer's own feelings, but I was expecting a pretty high gross factor, so that was a good thing for me. I've played the game, albeit ages ago, but not for very long because it was one of the scariest experiences I've ever had. This does a pretty good job of replicating that, and is easily one of the more frightening films I've seen in a long time. Despite the length (a full two hours) I didn't think it dragged at any point either. I felt the ending went slightly off the rails, if only because I wasn't completely following what was going on. The acting was generally fine, particularly Radha Mitchell in the lead, but I wish Sean Bean would give up attempting an American accent. Clearly the film's focus is on the visuals though, and in this respect it certainly scores.
The summary
Silent Hill is sick, disturbing and really good, but perhaps only those who have a passing awareness of the game will really enjoy it.
