Maybe I just like disaster movies. Or maybe whatever I watched I would've enjoyed because I've just finished my exams. Whatever it is (maybe it's just a good film!), I really enjoyed Poseidon. I was in the mood for a big, dumb blockbuster and that's exactly what it is. To my surprise, I actually found myself caring about the characters a little despite the fact that we don't really get to know them that well (the least defined is Josh Lucas's character, who basically just fits an all-purpose 'lead male' role). Also, despite the film's relatively short running time (97 minutes) it didn't feel too abridged or condensed. Sure, I wouldn't have minded a bit more buildup before the wave hit but the length certainly kept the flick moving at an unrelenting pace. Wolfgang Petersen knows what he's doing and has crafted a tense, well-made popcorn movie. Perhaps it should've been made sooner after Titanic to capitalise on the sinking boat craze.
The summary
If it's a decent, suspenseful, straightforward action movie you're looking for, Poseidon should definitely fit the bill.
