The review
This new film by Guillermo Del Toro has been praised almost universally by the critics, several calling it the best film of the year. So, needless to say, I had some pretty high expectations going into the film (the trailer was also excellent), but I have to admit they weren't quite fulfilled. I did really like it, but it didn't quite achieve that higher level that takes a film into classic status. What is immediately noticeable is the amazing visuals of the film, which do deserve the highest praise, especially since it was made on such a relatively meagre budget. The look really helps the film establish an excellent dark and foreboding atmosphere. The acting, too, is of the highest calibre, with the young girl at the centre of the story especially impressive. What surprised me was that the much-talked-about fantasy element is not really that big a part of the film. Most of the film is more like a war film, involving the Spanish army's fight (for fascist dictator Franco) against guerrilla rebels. This didn't end up being a negative point per se, as it was an engrossing narrative, but I would have liked more of a sense of unity between the two sides of the story. In a way it felt like two separate - both very good, but somewhat contrasting - films, and never quite solved that problem. Nevertheless it was an effective adult-oriented drama with some very spooky scenes and some pretty harsh violence.

The summary
Pan's Labyrinth is unique, and very good, but I didn't find it quite as wonderful as some critics have - mainly because I never felt particularly emotionally involved.
