Well, the blockbuster season has arrived with a bang. M:I:III is, in my opinion, one of the best big budget set-in-present-day action films for quite a while, and pretty much perfect popcorn entertainment. It's possibly the best of the series so far too (how often can you say that about a second sequel?). I was ready to pick flaws with the film, as I'm not a particular J.J. Abrams fan, but I just got swept up by the ride, making what few flaws there were seem insignificant. The first few minutes felt a bit TV-ish to me (wobbly camera, close ups, etc) but once the action kicked in I really got into it, big time. I loved how the action was very team-based, making for some excellent set-pieces, like an infiltration of Vatican City. After the huge scale of all the action leading up to it, the finale was surprisingly low-key, which was a slight disappointment for me, but I'm sure the intention was to make it more personal (I was just hoping for a nice brutal fist fight or something). When this film is in action mode, which is at least 75% of the time, it's superb. The quieter moments are not quite so compelling, but the film rattles along at such a pace that I didn't mind a bit.
The summary
Whatever your opinions on Tom Cruise, M:I:III certainly gives a lot of bang for your buck, and is great entertainment.
