Crank was one of those movies that turned out to be pretty much exactly what I'd expected. Nothing superb, nothing terrible; Crank is just a decent little action flick with an indie sensibility. The pace is pretty unrelenting due to the nature of the plot, which, combined with a very brisk running time (sub-90 minutes) gives you no time to get bored. However, certain aspects of the film, clearly designed to enhance the 'adrenaline rush' feel, grated slightly: the rapid MTV edits, the constantly shaking camera and so on. Still, the film had a great sense of humour and some very original visual touches. Statham again delivers a solid performance, but he's still searching for that breakout role that will make him a proper star. Crank, while a pretty good way to spend an hour and a half, is unfortunately not going to do it for him.
The summary
Crank is an efficient, lean action movie that overdoes the MTV stylings a little and is pretty forgettable, but is helped by some likeable performances by Statham and Amy Smart.
