RCN FOREVER - 20 May 09 Brian Starkey (Entry 09) directs your attention to a video about the RCN posted on 'youtube' and a reminder that May 4, 2010 will be the 100th anniversary.Click here 2010 REUNION NEWS - 14 May 09 Read the latest update on the 2010 Reunion News page ANNUAL E-MAIL ADDRESS VERIFICATION - 8 Sep 08 The annual e-mail address verification letter was e-mailed today to all those for whom we have addresses. If you didn't receive it then the address I have for you must be incorrect. If so, please forward your new address. Click here to see a copy of the letter. In addition to the list of non-working e-mail addresses appended to the letter there were a bunch more that came back today after I sent it out. Check the names here. If you have correct addresses for any of these people please either forward their address to me or forward the letter to them. Thank you. CROWSNEST MAGAZINE - 5 July 08 Every issue of the Crowsnest magazine (1948-1965) is now available on-line. Click here . They are arranged in six month groupings and you have to be patient as it takes a while to load each group but, once loaded, you can scroll through all the issues in that group. 2010 REUNION NEWS UPDATE - 1 June 08 Read the latest news on the next reunion on the 2010 Reunion News page. "SALTY DIPS" - 20 May 08 Whit Armstrong (Entry 04) has recently become a member of the Salty Dip publications committee. They are in the process of gathering new dips for Volume 9 to be published in time for the 2010 RCN 100th anniversary. Read Whit's letter here WHO DUN IT? - 11 May 08 Ken Neidy (Entry 10) poses a 'who dun it' question for those of us who were in Naden around 1960. See the Apprentice Days Adventures page. FINLAY BROTHERS - 03 May 08 Ken Finlay (Entry 05) and his brother Doug (Entry 02) used to be on the Missing Links page. Recently Ken discovered the web site and told Doug about it and they both made contact with me. Ken has sent some pictures of Entry 05 which have been uploaded to the Entry Pictures and Apprentice Picture drop-down menus. Both would be interested in hearing from classmates and Ken is looking for an HMCS Cape Breton cap tally. If anybody can help him his address is on the E-mail Address page. WHY I LIKE THE NAVY - 16 Mar 08 Mike Reynolds, Entry 18, has forwarded an article written by a Royal Australian Navy sailor that could apply to any of us who ever wore navy blue. Read it here THE HEALTH RISKS OF ASBESTOS - 1 Dec 07 Another article on asbestos - this one from the Oct 2007 Veteran Affairs Canada newsletter. It seems the government is finally acknowledging that we were exposed, on a daily basis, to the harmful effects of air-borne asbestos. If so, please forward your new address. Thanks. WARTIME ERA APPRENTICES - 6 Aug 07 Ours was not the first apprentice scheme in the RCN. During WW2 about 600 young men underwent apprentice training to provide much needed expertise in the boiler rooms and engine rooms of the rapidly-expanding RCN. John Mason runs a website for their association. One of the pages on the site, written by John, gives a history of their experiences. Read it here. It is well worth reading and following up on. "Read it Here" THE LAWS OF THE NAVY Gordon Galbraith (Entry 09) sent along the attached article for your reading pleasure. It may also be found on the website Ready Aye Ready.com which has many interesting navy related items "Laws" ARTICLE ON ASBESTOSIS - 07 Mar 07 Bill McRitchie forwarded a link to an article that appeared 07 Mar 07 on CBC's web site. He adds "It is interesting since many of us were exposed to asbestos during our time in the machinery spaces of various ships..." Connect to the link "here" and then think about getting chest x-rays if you haven't already done so lately. It can take more than thirty years to show up. NEW FEATURE - BULLETIN BOARD The Guest Book has very limited usefulness for dialogue and, as it appears that some of you wish to make comments from time to time, a new feature entitled "Bulletin Board" has been added. The Bulletin Board is intended to encourage personal commentary and/or interactive discussions on topics of interest to apprentices. You are invited to participate but are requested to avoid using overly abusive language and/or inappropriate subject matter. You can access the Bulletin Board from the link on this page or the home page or from here . Once the page loads simply click "Post a new message", type your name and your comment and then click "Submit message". Have fun, anything goes as long as it is in reasonably good taste. Check it out occasionally to read what others are writing and add your own comments. NEW PAGE "APPRENTICE DAYS ADVENTURES" We all had amusing things happen to us during our days on the apprenticeship. A new page has been created to provide a show-case for these humorous adventures. Frank Blackley, Entry 10, starts us off with Part 1 of his hilarious hitch-hiking trek across the US in Summer 1960. Also included is a link to the Royal Navy "Artificer Apprentices Association" site and a link to the RN "Fisgard Association" site. HMCS CAPE BRETON Visit one of the many web sites that feature what is now the second largest artificial reef in the world "HMCS Cape Breton" WEB SITE There have been over 25500 hits now on the Web site, mostly from people checking back to see if there is anything new. Does anybody out there have any apprentice related stories, thoughts or ideas they would like to share? We need new material to keep people interested enough to check back. SOME STATISTICS FROM THE MASTER DATABASE (updated 1 Apr 05) Of the 417 apprentices that are accounted for - 226 live in BC; 37 in AB; 3 in SK; 3 in MB; 62 in ON; 1 in QC; 10 in NB; 1 in PE; 68 in NS; 1 in NL and 5 in the US. There are 124 for whom we have no address and 74 deceased. EMAIL ADDRESSES We have added a list of email addreses so friends can stay in touch.. Let us know and we will add and/or activate yours. MASTER DATABASE The master database is where we keep the addresses, email and telephone numbers of the apprentices. It was originally started for the first reunion in 1982 and has been kept up ever since. It is essential that it be kept current so that we can inform you of planned reunions, etc. We do have addresses for many people but there are still a number that we haven't been able to find. The page Missing Links lists those people for whom we have no address. Please review the list and if you have any information, let us know by email. Doug Miller, Entry 11, is now the maintainer of the database (and the webmaster) and all new information should be sent to him. So, if you move or get/change an email address, please let us know. PHOTO ALBUM MEMORIES CD John McKee, Entry 10, is still looking for "any clippings, photos, old magazine articles, apprentice memorabilia, anything that can be scanned into a CD." An updated CD will be available at the next reunion, so if you have something of interest, please contact John at jdan[email protected]. |
