I Can't Make You Love Me

I Can't Make You Love Me

1. I’m scribbling down my heart in this letter
the words don’t come easily.
I don’t know how else to tell you
I feel something between us.

2. We have been friends forever
but I got too close.
Maybe trusted too much.
Now I’ve fallen for you.

*  I can’t make you love me.
I can’t tell you how to feel.
I can only pray that you’ll give me a chance someday.
But I can’t make you love me.

3. Maybe I’m just serenading shadows
and my voice is lost on the wind.
But we could be so good together if you let my love in.

4. My heart is tired of fighting.
I’ve been scared too long. Do I let go or hold on?
Now it’s up to you.

*  I can’t make you love me.
I can’t tell you how to feel.
I can only pray that you’ll give me a chance someday.
But I can’t make you love me.

+ I know you’ve weathered all the heartaches
on the stormy sea of love
But if you trust in me, I’ll shelter you
and sail your heart back home.

*  I can’t make you love me.
I can’t tell you how to feel.
I can only pray that you’ll give me a chance someday.
But I can’t make you love me.

I Can't Make You Love Me

This is another old song that the band wanted me to resurrect. I wrote it years ago, then found out Bonnie Raitt recorded a song with the same title. So what. I was sure my song was better.

I was wrong. It kicked my song's sorry little bootie. So I stopped singing this for a long time. (It didn't help that I hated the way the demo turned out.)

Recently, I was messing around on the piano and sang this again. The guys in the band loved it. It is still pretty lovesick teenager sounding...but we all liked it. And the Eagles-esque harmonies on the bridge rule.

So this song will still probably go through some more lyrical revisions until I am happy with it again, but since we are playing it live now, I wanted to post the version we are currently playing.
