Introduction Ofcourse with the foundation of the Formula 16 HP rules we haven't reach the end of the F16HP initiative. Now it really starts. Several setups are already sailing and these combined with the foundation and grandfathered boats will from the basis from which the class must grow. The internationally character of the F16HP class is an advantage as wel as its Achilles heel. We have started with participants from several countries and even continents, bringing them together for more than one caribian regatta or Texel is difficult at best so an alternative must be thought up in order to let these F16HP's compete with eachother during the start up fase. The David and Goliath Cup for the season 2001/2002 is such an alternative.

The David and Goliath Cup ; the first Open F16 HP competition The "David and Goliath" Cup, or the D&G cup for short, will be the main F16 HP competition in the startup fase of the class. The idea is simple, beat bigger boats on elapsed time with an Open F16 HP design and earn competition points. The bigger the adversery beaten, the heigher the added points. Both 2-up and 1-up victories are combined into one score. At the end of a competition season a score will be calculated using the following formula ((all points except race entry points added up) / number of races ) + race entry points = final score. The crew with the heighest score wins. The basic rules. -1- A competition runs from the october 1st to september 30th the next year. Or the Aussies kick of the season and the US and European sailors will try to catch up. -2- All designs having a texel handicap rating of 103 or less may petition to enter. All Open F16 HP designs may enter directly, all others have to ask the F16 HP authority for a one-season dispensation. -3- Both 2-up and both 1-up victories of a skipper and crew combination count for the same entry in the list unless requested otherwise by the crew. -4- All races in which at least one boat of any "hunted" class is entered is considered valid. -5- It is the crew responsibility to forward the correct results and the total results to the competition leader. Not complying with this will be punished by setting the score to zero. -6- Definition of "beating" : Reaching the finishline before the other party, this includes DNF's or DSQ of the beaten party. This excludes DNS however. The victorious participant himself must have finished. -7- The Hunted (or Prey) Classes : Formula 18 (this includes both US I-18 and US Tiger in this competition) Any >=20 ft. boat (also includes T5.7 and N5.8 for the Aussies and Hurricane 5.9's for UK) 49-er skiffs. A-class Any Inter 17, Hobie FX-one or Nacra 5.5 uni carbon; no matter what configuration. -8- The scoring system 1-up 2-up Any entered and finished race where prey is present 1 point 1 point Any A-class beaten on elapsed time 4 points 2 points Any Inter 17, Hobie FX-one, Nacra 5.5 uni, etc on elapsed 1 point 1 point Any F18 and H5.9 / N5,8 (no spi) beaten on elapsed time 4 points 2 points Any 20 ft or over and H5.9/ N5,8 (+ spi) beaten on elapsed time 8 points 4 points Any 49-er or Aus 18 ft beaten on elapsed time 4 points 2 points

A bit complex but fair This competition is fair to all of us for in the US, EU and Australia there are enough F18's, 20 footers like Nacra 6.0, Tornado or Hobie 20's and A-cats to give everbody a fair change. Ofcourse there will be differences from country to country but when one country is strong in 20 footers and inter 17's, then another country is strong in 49-ers and A-cats. We can all get lucky with a DSF or DSQ of a big boy and just participating earns you points. If you can only race one or two races make sure it is a big regatta and score big. When no big race is near enough to you, than make sure you enter as many club races as possible and earn points by participating often. So enter yourself and your crew by mailing to [email protected] !
