feet.
Chairman:I thought every candidate on the shortlist was very impressive. Panel member 1:Agreed. We would appoint any one of them. Panel member 2:Indeed but I thought the last we interviewed had one outstanding quality. Chairman:What is it that particularly struck you about him? Panel member 2:The ability to think on his feet. He dealt with the most difficult and unexpected questions we threw at him very coolly and intelligently. Chairman:That's certainly true and it's not a very common quality.
The ability to think on his feet。On one's feet是「站立,和on foot(步行)不同,例如:(1) The accident has brought the traffic to a standstill. It's quicker to go on foot(意外事故使交通完全停頓,步行會快一點)。(2) The guard felt tired : he had been on his feet for hours(那衛兵站了多個小時,感到很疲倦)。 He can think on his feet, and excels as an orator(他思想敏捷,是個出色的演說家)。 What is it that particularly struck you about him? It struck me as odd(那使我感到不尋常)。 What particularly struck you about him? Tom was arrested on 3 December for robbery(十二月三日,湯姆因搶劫被捕)這一句,要強調「何人」被捕,可改作It was Tom that was arrested;要強調「何時」被捕,可改作It was on 3 December that Tom was arrested;要強調「為何」被捕,可改作It was for robbery that Tom was arrested。 Who was it that was arrested? (= who was arrested?)以及When/Why was it that Tom was arrested? (= When/Why was Tom arrested?) |
