傳真機的大小 Fax一字，讀者大概都認識。現在請回答一個問題：facsimile是甚麼？Facsimile是fax的原形，由兩個拉丁字合成，fac即「使」，simile即「像」。從前，傳真機叫facsimile machine。In the 1960s, a facsimile machine generally took more than five minutes to transmit a letter-sized document是說「一九六○年代，傳真機傳送普通書信長短的文件，要超過五分鐘」。到了一九八○年代，fax這個縮寫漸漸取代facsimile。現在，facsimile一般只用來說「摹本」或「複印本」，例如：This is a facsimile of da Vinci's Mona Lisa（這是達文西作品《蒙娜麗莎》的摹本）。Fax和phone都是縮寫，但fax取代了facsimile成為正宗用語，phone卻未能正式取代telephone，至今仍被視為「通俗用語」。 一九六○年代的傳真機，重二十多公斤，是一龐然大物；今天，傳真機小巧得多。本課對話中，售貨員談到一款傳真機時特別強調：It has the smallest footprint。Footprint的原意當然是「腳印」，例如：The footprints in the mud led us to a wooden hut（我們循著泥土上的腳印，走到一間小木屋前）。機器或其他物件在平面上所佔空間，現在也叫footprint，例如：(1) There is only enough desk space for a small-footprint computer（桌上所有空間，只能放一臺小體積電腦）。(2) The footprint of the fax machine measures 20cm in width and 30cm in length（這部傳真機所佔空間是寬二十公分，長三十公分）。 |
