Foreigner:That man at the bar got really annoyed with me just now. 外國人:賣酒櫃臺處那個男人,剛才對我十分不滿。 Friend:Yes, I could see him having a go at you. What was the reason? 友人:不錯,我看見他在指責你,原因是甚麼? Foreigner:I wanted to get drinks for us and he said I had jumped the queue.But people weren't standing in line at the bar. 外國人:我要買酒,他說我插隊,但櫃臺前沒有人在排隊啊。 Friend:That's true, but there actually was still a queue in the sense that the rule is "first come, first served" and he must have been at the bar before you. 友人:不錯,但根據「先來先獲接待」原則,實際上還是有人在排隊。那人一定是比你先走到櫃臺前。 Foreigner:Where I come from, it's every man for himself. 外國人:在我的國家,人人都是自己照顧自己。 Friend:But not here I'm afraid, so it's best to follow the local rule if you want to avoid such unpleasantness. 友人:這裡卻不是那樣的。你要避免類似的不愉快事情,最好遵守本地規矩。 |

輪候買酒 「插隊」英文叫to jump the queue或to cut in line,例如:You mustn't try to jump the queue/cut in line(切勿想插隊)。 Pub的賣酒櫃臺前,顧客不會排隊買酒,但會根據「先到先得」原則輪候。假如你貿貿然走到櫃臺,不理會已在櫃臺前輪候的顧客,逕自向員工要酒,那就錯得厲害:Customers will be served in turn, and anyone who try to get served out of turn will be ignored by bar staff and looked upon with disfavor by other customers(賣酒櫃臺員工會依次招呼顧客,任何人企圖插隊,他們都不會理會,其他顧客也會不滿其所為)。 根據pub的不成文規矩,走到櫃臺前輪候要酒,完全不用作聲,連向櫃臺職員招手都嫌過分,只要向他們笑一笑、點點頭或揚揚眉,他們就會報以一笑等,表示「知道了,待會兒就輪到你」。總之,要表示自己在輪候,你只需和職員目光相接:Eye contact is all that is necessary to let bar staff know that you are waiting。有時,你會聽見有些顧客向櫃臺職員說:I've been stood here since last Monday(我上星期一開始就站在這裡啦)、Any chance of a drink sometime this week?(這個星期內有機會輪到一杯嗎?)、Get a move on(快點)等。這是很特別的常客才可以說的話,一般客人切勿仿效。 本課對話有I could see him having a go at you一語。Have a go at somebody是「指責或批評某人」,例如:He had a go at me for being late(我遲到,被他指責)。 |
