impression

印象、詳情 巴納比出席面試後說：I think I made a good impression。讀者也許沒有想到，今天中文常說的「印象」，其實是impression的直譯。 Impress是「用壓力留下印記」，例如Strange characters were impressed on the ancient coin（那個古錢上印 \一些奇怪文字）。把這個意思引伸，就是「在腦海中留下印象」，例如：His talk on environmental protection impressed me deeply（他論環保，在我心中留下深刻印象）。古代中文雖然有「喻如閻浮提一切眾生身及餘外色，如是等色，海中皆有印象」的說法（《大集經》卷十五），但這「印象」是指水中鏡裡的影子；後人取這現成說法翻譯impression，倒也貼切。 Impression是名詞，除了「印象」，還有「捺印」的意思，例如：(1) The wax bore the impression of the Great Seal（封蠟上有國璽的印記）。(2) First impressions are most important（第一個印象非常重要）。To make an impression是指「給了良好或深刻的印象」，例如：He made an impression on me by his humility（他謙遜的態度，給我一個很好的印象）。留意Did they go through your résumé in detail?一語。Detail（細節）是可數名詞(countable noun)，但是，in detail（詳細地）卻習慣不用複數形式，切勿說in details，例如：He told me the details of his plan/He told me his plan in detail/He detailed his plan to me（他把他計劃的詳情告訴我）。第三句的detail是動詞。 |
