各讓一步，可以接受 阿姆斯特朗和霍金斯議價，最後說：We'll meet you half way。這是議價的常用語，意思是取買賣雙方所說價錢的中間數字。To meet someone half way的一個同義說法，是to split the difference。Split是「劈開」或「使分裂」，例如a split second（二分之一秒）即「電光火石之間」；difference是「差價」。To split the difference是說「把差額除以2」，例如：He asked for $500 for the fax machine, and I offered him $400. "Let's split the difference," he said. "You can have it for $450."（那部傳真機他要價五百元，我還價四百元。他說：「我們各讓一步，四百五十元賣給你。」）本課對話還有兩個常用語值得談談：in no position和to live with。In no position (to do something) 指限於權力、形勢等，不能做某事，反義詞是in a position (to do something)，例如：(1) I am in no position to sign (= I cannot sign) this document on behalf of the company（我不能代表公司簽署這份文件）。(2) With more than ten million dollars in the bank, he is in a good position to retire (= he can retire) from work（他有超過一千萬元存在銀行裡，可以退休了）。Live with則是接受不如意的事，例如：(1) The doctor told me that the disease could not be cured and I had to live with it（醫生告訴我說，這疾病無法治癒，我只能接受）。(2) He refused to live with the unfair regulations, and urged the management to abolish them（他不接受那些不公平的規例，促請管理層廢除）。 |
