| 對話 Jock:Have you enjoyed the evening? 喬克:今晚玩得高興嗎？ Fiona:Oh yes, you've taken me to places I never knew existed. 菲奧納:啊，很高興。你帶我去的地方，我從前聽都沒聽過。 Jock:Well you're pretty new here and I've been working in this area for almost five years, so I know most of the good places by now. 喬克:嗯，你在這裡時間還短，我卻在這裡工作將近五年了，有甚麼好去處，大致都知道。 Fiona:And this is one of the nicest pubs I've been in. 菲奧納:我沒有去過比這一家更好的酒店。 Jock:It is very attractive. 再來一杯？ 喬克問菲奧納要不要再喝一杯：Fancy another? Fancy本義是「幻想」，例如：The cop fancied himself a superman（那警察以為自己是超人）。人往往幻想自己喜歡的事，所以fancy也可解作「想要」、「喜歡」，作動詞或名詞，例如：(1) She fancied the blue dress rather than the green（她喜歡那套藍色衣裳，而不是那套綠色的）。(2) The tycoon's interest in Mary was no more than a passing fancy（那大亨對瑪麗只是一時感到興趣）。 菲奧納不想再喝酒了：It's time to go and I really need my beauty sleep。It's time to go的另一說法是It's time we went：記著it's time之後，假如用主詞(subject)，說現在的事動詞也須用過去式。Beauty sleep二字則多帶說笑意味，指「使人容光煥發的充足睡眠」。She evidently did not get her beauty sleep last night 即「她昨夜顯然沒有好好睡一覺」。 今天，年輕男女上pub，女一般也要buy their rounds（輪番還酒）。菲奧納假如要再喝一杯，她也許會說：Oh yes, what're you drinking? It's my round（好，再來一杯，你要喝甚麼？輪到我買酒了）。老一輩的男人大概還會堅持「男人付錢」，那就讓他們付錢好了。 假如你喝酒速度追不上人家，人家要再買一輪酒的時候，你手上還有大半杯，那怎樣辦？聽到人家問What's yours?（你要喝甚麼？）你可以說：Nothing for me, thanks（謝謝，不要了）。先把杯中酒喝掉，到再下一輪才再來一杯。 |
