BUDDHA VANDANA

(HOMAGE TO THE BUDDHA)

Iti pi so Bhagava Araham

Sammasambuddho vijjacarana-sampanno

Sugato Lokavidu Anuttaro

Purisa damma-sarathi

Sattha Deva-manussanam

Buddho Bhagava ti.

Such indeed is the Blessed One, Exalted,

Omniscient, endowed with knowledge and conduct.

Well-gone, knower of the worlds,

An incomparable charioteer

for the training of individuals,

Teacher of gods and men,

Enlightened and Holy.

 

The buddha has nine virtues, namely :-

Accomplished.

The Well-gone

Sublime

Auspicious

Knower of the worlds

Charioteer for the training of individuals

Leader of men to be tamed

The meaning of the nine virtues of the Buddha are as follows :-

(1)

ARAHAM

The Buddha is an Arahant because He has destroyed all types of mental defilements such as greed, hatred and ignorance and is not subject to rebirth.

(2)

SAMMASAMBUDDHO

He is fully enlightened (sammasambuddho) because He has discovered all things rightly and by Himself that is the Four Noble Truths.

(3)

VIJJACARANA-SAMPANNO

He is endowed with knowledge (i.e. possessed various psychic powers and the knowledge of destruction of the defilements) and highest virtous conduct.

(4)

SUGATO

He is called Sugato (Well-gone) because of a manner of going that is good.

(5)

LOKAVIDU

He is the knower of the worlds (lokavidu) because He has known the worlds in all ways.

(6)

ANUTTARO

PURISA DAMMA-SARATHI

He is the only incomparable leader of men to be tamed because He guides men to be tamed. He tames not only human beings but also non-humans and animals.

(7)

SATTHA DEVA-MANUSSANAM

He not only teaches the best beings (gods) but also those capable of progress (humans) and even animals are trained.

(8)

BUDDHO

He is enlightened with knowledge regarding the liberation from suffering and has understood the Four Noble Truths.

(9)

BHAGAVA

He is the only Supreme Bhagava, signifying the respect and veneration accorded to Him as the highest of all beings and distinguished by His special qualities.
