Certain stage traditions originally founded in ignorance
and preserved after they became traditions, have not
been considered; the object of the Director has been to
insure naturalness in an atmosphere of romance, the
object of the Author to intimate the nobilities and
grandeur of the woman who was devotedly loved by
Julius Caesar. Perfect freedom has been exercised in
                  the adaptation.

   "Stop!-these are for
the Queen! I love her even
        unto death!"

9
   "You shall be dead
  before those flowers
wither--unless you speak!"

10
"You may kill me, Queen,
but the love in my soul for
 you will never perish!"

11
"If I let you live--and love
  me--ten days, will you
  swear then to destroy
        yourself?"

12
On the fifth day.

13
Diomedes, her cousin, asks
  Cleopatra to give him
audience in which to offer
  her his hand and heart
        and riches.

14
"I perceive, Royal Egypt,

  "He lives whose love is
greater than his life!...poor
Pharon, thy crown shall be
   placed upon thy head
         by Death."

The ten days have passed.

17
"He will sleep a long,
      long time!"

18
"I shall begin to live when
I die--and dreams come of
you--and you--and you---!"

19
"Thank thee, Isis! If the
Queen takes his life, I shall
        return it!"

20
 "Unless Cleopatra sent
you to save me I swear to
plunge this dagger into
       my heart!"

21
 Iras deceives Pharon by
telling him that the Queen
 sent her to restore his
 life and that he must
      leave Egypt.

22
"I bear a message for the
Queen of Egypt from my
 master, Marc Antony!
     Let me pass!"

27
   Antony holds court in
Tarsus to inflict punishment
on the enemies of Rome in
  rebellion. Cleopatra has
       been summoned.

28
 "Antony will devastate
Egypt if Cleopatra fails
        to come!"

29
"It were better for Antony
 did she never come--for
    his army is not as
  powerful as her eyes!"

30
"But she, your Queen, the
leader of it all, is not here
to answer. I will wait no
longer. Deliver these pris-
oners to the executioner!"

31
"What defense have I to
  make, since you have
already judged me guilty?"

32
  "I thank my Lord! and,
  since my innocence will
not offend, I will not blush
        to own it!"

33
"I do not hate Rome--nor--
  Antony! I do hate my
 lord's enemy Octavius!"

34
"I believe you!
 Forgive me!"

35
 "I am ready to sacrifice
all--friends, wife, country,
   an Empire--everything
       for thy love!"

36
  "Ho, ho! your mighty
Antony has capitulated to
  this woman of Egypt.
    I told you so."

37
"Suppose Antony were told
 that his Queen had just
 left the embraces of my
    slave Pharon---?"

38
"Say what you will--she is
  the mental and moral
 superior of this Roman
       debauche!"

41
  Time passes and Antony
lingers in the land of the
 Lotus, forgetting every
      tie of the past.

42
 "Go kill that man--you
remember--the fisherman--
         Pharon!"

43
"I love the woman you love
so well--that I'd give my
 life--for the man--she
         loves!"

44
"And are you jealous of
this poor slave's devotion
who would give his life for
thee because I love thee?"

45
 "Thou hast shown me the
infinite beauty of thy soul,
  my love Forgive me!"

46
The beginning of the end
   of forgetfulness.

47
  Ventidius, faithful
friend, brings messages
       from Rome.

48
  A message from home
announces the news that
Flavia, his wife, is dead;
   also that Rome is
threatened and needs him.

49
"And what of the married
         woman?"

50
 "I am happy here, and
here I shall remain. Let
Rome extricate herself
   as best she may!"

51
  "O Queen! be you now
his better spirit! Let Rome
believe for a single day that
Antony has returned, and
   Octavius is lost!"

52
"Go---but be faithful
       to me!"

53
"Follow your armor,
     my lord!"

58
She is warned that Antony
has deceived her, and that
  he will never return.

59
"I must see the Queen!"

60
"The message you received
was a lie! Antony loves you
 --he will return to you!"

61
   "The sea has been
delivered of the pirates,
Antony has captured the
   fleet of Pompey!"

62
"Octavius and Antony are
reconciled, and to insure
the peace of the world,
  Antony has---has---
  married Octavia!"

63
"Tonight, you, Iras and I
shall set sail for Rome!"

64
 Antony begs her to arm
her war fleet and sail at
    once for Actium.

65
"We go to Actium instead
of Rome. My fleet of war
    will follow us!"

66
  Antony, at war with the
brother of his wife, delays
   action, waiting for
    Cleopatra's fleet.

67
Octavia, the faithful wife
of Antony, comes to urge
 peace between him and
 her brother, Octavius.

68
  "Will not you be recon-
ciled to Octavius? you, my
   husband, to him, my
         brother?"

69
"Do as your gentle wife
urges, and the imperial
crown of Rome is within
      your grasp!"

70
"The war-beacon shall not
be lighted! Go tell this to
Octavius, my noble wife,
I shall be your husband
     from now on!"

71
"I am the wife of Antony!
     I am Octavia!"

72
News that the war ships of
 Cleopatra have arrived.

73
Fearing that the news of
 Cleopatra's arrival may
cause Antony to break his
resolutions to stop the war,
   Ventidius persuades
Diomedes to tell Antony the
scandals concerning her.

74
"Caesar, Pompey, Sextus,
 Herod, my noble lord
himself--they are legion!
 Pharon, my slave! And
now Kephren, the captain
    of her guard!"

75
"It is a lie!"

76
"Prove it by killing him!"

77
"General, your wife comes
  from her brother with
 humble terms of peace!"

   The Battle of Actium.
Fearing if Antony wins the
battle that his love of power
will be greater than his love
 for her, Cleopatra orders
   her ships to retreat.

82
Antony, weakly suspecting
 Cleopatra of treachery
orders his ships to follow,
 thus losing the battle...

83
After Actium.

84
"Charmian, go tell him to
come to me! Tell him I
   am dying of grief!"

85
  "Oh, Actium! Actium!
 Thou art my shame and
ruin! My curse be upon her
  who did this to me!"

86
"Yes, lead us! We will
not desert you! We have
ten legions at our back!"

87
 "The Queen, my lord, is
dying of grief! She begs to
 see you but once again!"

88
"To-morrow we enter
Alexandria to punish
 Cleopatra for her
    treachery!"

89
"Swear to me that if I am
defeated you will plunge
    your sword into
      this heart!"

90
With the morning's light.

91
  "O wings of the morn!
I invoke thee now, to take
the message of my heart to
 his-that he will come to
        my side!"

92
"I betray you to Caesar?
 Can you, Oh! can you
  accuse me of that!"

93
"The army of Octavius is
preparing to attack thee!
The honor of Royal Egypt
      is menaced!"

94
"The whole city is in the
 hands of Octavius...!"

95
"The Queen is dead! The
    Queen is dead!"

97
"The report is false.
   She is alive."

98
Cleopatra escapes into the
 tomb she had built for
         herself.

99
 Cleopatra, having deter-
mined to try two plans to
outwit Octavius, explains
one of them to Kephren.

100
"When I lift my hands to
my lips, strike him dead!"

101
"I have sent for you to
crave mercy for him---
     Marc Antony!"

102
"Guard this woman! Your
life shall answer for it if
she does harm to herself!"

103
"To lie in the silent grave
by your dear side, Antony,
is life! This wakefulness
 is a thousand deaths!"

104
"This fruit is blessed by me,
a holy priest! It has that
     within to remove
      her madness!"

105
"There is a serpent in
      the basket!"
