Imperative

  1. We use the imperative in many different ways, for example, to give orders, to make offers, suggestions and requests, and to give warnings.
  2. Stop! (Order)

    Have some more coffee. (Offer)

    Tell your boss you can�t work late tonight. (Suggestion)

    Help me with these bags, please. (Request)

    Look out! Be careful. (Warning)

  3. The imperative has the same form as the infinitive without to.
  4. Sit down.

    Open the window.

  5. We make the negative imperative with don�t/ do not.
  6. Don�t sit down.

    Don�t open the window.

    Do not feed the animals. (On a notice in a zoo)

  7. The imperative does not normally have a subject, but we can use a noun or pronoun to make it clear who we are speaking to.
  8. Andrew shut the door, please.

    Have some more tea, Kate.

    Sit down, everybody.

  9. After the imperative, we can use the question tags will/ wont�/ would you? and can/ can�t/ could you?

Give me some paper, will you?

Turn down the radio, won�t you?

Help me with these bags, could you?

 

Let�s

1. We use let�s (= let us) + infinitive without to, as a kind of first person plural imperative, to make suggestion.

We�re late. Let�s hurry.

What shall we do this evening? �Let�s stay home.�

2. We can make negatives with let�s not.

Let�s not wait.

Let�s not buy these T-shirts.

3. After let�s we can use the question tag shall we?

Let's go the cinema, shall we?
