Fic
Recommendations
I'm a very versatile fic
enjoyer. Although I do NOT read/write slash...I have nothing against people
who enjoy slash or would be slash characters if their lives were fics, but I
don't think that any of the characters I love would be likely to do that...however,
I must say that I wouldn't refuse to read any non-explicit stuff from writers
I trust. They can be trusted to set people up properly.
Special
note: I DO NOT RECOMMEND DEAD FICS. If it's up here, I swear, it's either finished
or I have the absolute promise of the author that it will be.
And yes, I
think I will be a shameless free-publicity seeker and add in a reco for my own
fics. They're quite good (the HP one is better, since I have a beta for that),
and I LOVE MY REVIEWS!!! Please, please, give me helpful advice. Half my HP
fic was written by my beta and/or my best reviewer. And I do absolutely adore
good advice. So try and give it to me! I'll even accept flames (though I'm not
promising that I won't say something nasty in reply...)
My Favorite Harry Potter
Fics
- Traitor, Jeanne
(fanfiction.net): This is one of the most powerful and adorable
fics I've ever read...heck, some of the most powerful and adorable fiction
I've ever met. And her Ron...the first man I really stared into space, dreaming
about. Basic storyline, Dumbledore asks Ron to be work for Voldemort as a
spy. But, oh, it is SO much more than that...I absolutely ADORE this fic.
- Call of
the Wild, WolfieTwins (fanfiction.net, schnoogle.com): As the
site that recommended it to me said, if you're a Lupin fan and don't read
this, you don't deserve to call yourself one. Kill yourself with a plastic
spoon. It's a "Lupin: The Lost Years" fic, and it's incredibly powerful.
Very well balanced, which is important. Plenty of sweetness, plenty of angst,
plenty of humor, plenty of adventure, plenty of mystery. Just plenty of goodness.
- The Slytherin Rising
Series, J L Matthews (schnoogle.com): A fantastic story. Written
to stop prejudice, that is an important part of it, but the best part is the
actual story, characters, etc. READ IT!!! It's a great, great series.
:
- HP and the Day of
Dreams, HP and the World of Change, HP and the Seer's Prophecy,
Ady, fanfiction.net: Although year five is undeniablybumpy, by year six
she's getting into her stride, and her year seven is an absolute dream. She's
a brilliant author in her own right, and her fannon is to die for. I beta
for her, and (if I may say so) my talents shine in those chapters I've been
involved w/. (I only came in halfway through year seven). Don't be misled
by the fact that a new girl comes in in fifth year, etc. etc...this is NOT
a Mary Sue fic. It's brilliant. Different plots each time, so all I can do
is recommend that you READ IT.
- HQoW, Not as a Last
Resort, Getting the Point, and pretty well anything else Ron or Hermione
by Arabella (fanfiction.net): HQoW is Hermione's diary (which talks
back, but you CAN see where it keeps its brain) first through fourth years.
And...the first few chapters, esp., are awkward. Kinda like the movie (though
in a totally different way), it improves after she, Harry, and Ron make friends.
After that, I swear, it's just lilke Hermione were HER character instead of
JKR's. And she also has a really good grip on Ron. Her Harry is shaky, her
Gin is shakier (although her other-point-of-views of the tasks are interesting,
even when written from Ginny's point of view), and DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT
read her Draco (shudder, shudder, shudder). But read her Hermione-based stuff
if you read nothing else in the fannon world.
- Anything by Hyphen (fanfiction.net):
A FANTASTIC humorous Marauder's writer. Her views on all of them are dead-on
and hilarious. Try "The First to Get Eaten" and you'll be hooked
for life.
- Harry Potter and
the Dawn of Darkness, Naralina (fanfiction.net): A very powerful fic,
with a deep and abiding, true vision of what kind of person becomes a Death
Eater and why. Although the story (once you get into the third chapter) is
good, well-written (sorry, the second chapter is just plain wierd--demonic-wierd),
and enjoyable, I like it mostly because it's got such great insight and perspective.
However, she does take MONTHS between chapters, so don't start it if you're
the impatient type.
- Anything by PezMaster
(fanfiction.net, schnoogle.com): Another really good humorous MWPP
writer. I haven't read all her stuff yet, but what I've seen so far, I really,
REALLY like.
- Most of Trinity Day's
HP (fanfiction.net): I haven't read all of it, and I can't guarantee
that some of it isn't dead, but her short stories and things with the *complete*
note are really good. She's especially good with James/Lily and Sirius-as-a-friend-of-both
dynamics.
- Summer Wedding, Summer
Romance and Alarum, Elucreh (fanfiction.net): SWSR was
originally a simple story about Harry telling Ginny he was in love with her.
Then my pesky conscience, my good friend and best reviewer Jess, and my beta
Ady got onto me, and it's been transformed into something much more interesting
and much more difficult. It's a good piece, the original story mixing w/ Hermione
planning her wedding to Ron and flashbacks of the intervening time. It's a
great format and a good fic, though I do say so. Alarum is a short and highly
humorous fic about Hermione giving Ron an alarm clock.
Steps to Finding Good Fics
- Ask your friends and other
people you trust.
- Try the fic recommendations
on websites you enjoyed (hopefully, including mine!)
- Try the "favorite
authors" and "favorite stories" section of your fave authors
(I've found some of my best that way).
- If you get absolutely desperate,
try searching the summaries; try not to get that desperate, there are simply
ZILLIONS out there...
