Kansas State used a stiff defense and three rushing touchdowns by quarterback Jonathan Beasley to defeat Washington 24-20 in the 1999 Culligan Holiday Bowl. Trailing 20-17 late in the third quarter, the Wildcats embarked on a 20-play, 92-yard drive that took 9 minutes, 54 seconds off the clock to score the eventual game-winning touchdown. The drive was set up after senior safety Lamar Chapman picked off a Marques Tuiasosopo pass. K-State took a 17-13 lead on its first possession of the second half, scoring on an 11-yard TD run by Beasley. The Huskies came back with a 73-yard TD drive when Maurice Shaw scored on a five-yard run. That score was the first against K-State in the third quarter during the entire season. Beasley completed 15 of 31 passes for 216 yards, including eight completions to Quincy Morgan for 104 yards. Beasley also led the Wildcats in rushing with 48 yards on 20 attempts and three touchdowns to earn Offensive MVP honors. Senior defensive end Darren Howard was named Defensive MVP after totaling nine tackles, including five tackles-for-loss and three quarterback sacks. All-America linebacker Mark Simoneau finished his Wildcat career with eight tackles, including three TFLs and one sack. NOTING THE WILDCATS • Jonathan Beasley, who was named the game’s Offensive MVP, set a K-State Bowl game record with three rushing touchdowns. • With the victory K-State joined Florida State as the only two schools in the nation to win at least 11 games each of the last three seasons. • K-State moved to No. 6 in the final national polls for the highest end-of-the-season ranking in school history. • The victory improved K-State’s all-time Bowl record to 4-4, including 4-3 under Bill Snyder. • Mark Simoneau finished his Wildcat career with eight tackles, including three tackles-for-loss and a quarterback sack. • Darren Howard was named the game’s Defensive MVP after making nine tackles, including five tackles-for-loss and three quarterback sacks. |
