  港大孫中山歷史專題講座系列 HKU Sun Yat-sen History Lecture Series :
- 031107 陳福霖教授 "孫中山的政治形象" Prof Glbert CHAN Fook-Lam "The Many Faces of Sun Yat-sen"
* Lecture begins with caveats of objectivity in academic research and twisting of historical facts, height of Dr. Sun, whether Dr. Sun was a smoker, the 3 faces of Dr. Sun portrayed by (i) Dr Sun himself; (ii) KMT; and (iii) CCP. Anwsers of "Peaceful Revolutionary" to questions of whether Dr. Sun was violent, as compared to Gandhi's Non-violent Revolution. "Selling of Outer Mongolia" to Russia and other foreign powers willing to support. Dr. Sun's private life etc. (click the date to see more and listen to the WHOLE event in mp3)

* 1. Prof. Chan Lau Kit-Ching's introduction (Cantonese) Download mp3 2,050k 4:22

* 2. Prof Glbert CHAN Fook-Lam's Lecture begins with caveats of objectivity in academic research and twisting of historical facts, height of Dr. Sun, whether Dr. Sun was a smoker, the 3 faces of Dr. Sun portrayed by (i) Dr Sun himself; (ii) KMT; and (iii) CCP. Different people took out of context from speeches of Dr. Sun during his political career from 1894 (Hawaii Revive China Society established) to 1925. Download mp3 4,856k 10:21

* 3. Face of Dr. Sun portrayed by (i) Dr Sun himself, as seen in his writing of 1919's Chapter 8 of "Sun Wen theory". Prof. Chan analysed the text (and other texts) and concluded that we must doubt Dr Sun's own word that he decided at the age of 19 in 1885 to overthrow Qing Dynasty. Prof. Chan suggested that in order to portray a proper image for a politician, it is accepted for Dr Sun to twist the facts [Question posed by Anthony Chua to the internet audience: Do you agree with Prof. Chan's learned view?] Download mp3 3,591k 7:39

* 4. In the 1896 London kidnap publicity drive to establish his image of being a hero, Dr. Sun never used the word "revolution". Prof. Chan suggested again that in order to portray a proper image for a politician, it is accepted for Dr Sun to twist the facts [Same Question by Anthony Chua to the internet audience as above] Download mp3 3,530 7:31

* 5. Face of Dr. Sun portrayed by (ii) KMT. In view of the illness of Dr Sun, Prof. Chan was surprised to find out that KMT Constitution of 1924 appointed Dr. Sun as the Chairman-for-Life, with no Deputy Chairman and no mechanism to select a successor. Download mp3 1,177k 2:30

* 6. In view of Dr. Sun's knowledge as a medical student trained by the predecessor of the HKU Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Chan was surprised to find out that KMT Constitution of 1924 has no mechanism to select a successor. After Dr Sun's death a power struggle led to the an assassination. KMT historians began to glorify Dr. Sun, by twisting facts. Prof. Chan considered the twisting as justified. But in view of Dr Sun's revolution to overthrow imperialism, Prof. Chan considered it impolite to use imperial terms to describe the tomb of Dr Sun Download mp3 4,591k 9:47

* 7. In 1972 Lian Shanna (my spelling should be wrong) was surprised to find out that the "Dr. Sun Myth" could be established in only a few years after Dr Sun's death. The twisting of facts could also be seen in Chiang Kai-shek's "New Life Movement"
Face of Dr. Sun portrayed by (iii) CCP. CCP described Dr. Sun as the forerunner of the CCP revolution. Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai also exaggerated the facts for the benefit of raising the image of CCP. Although he said that Sanmin Chu-i is equivalent to Socialism, which is equivalent to Communism, Dr. Sun also criticised the class struggle theory of Marx because the advancement of a society depends on the integration of different classes.
Prof. Chan's conclusion begins with a citation Download mp3 3,912k 8:20

* 8. Prof. Chan's conclusion continue with a citation which says, in essence, that we remember Dr. Sun for his strong spirit at times of failure. Prof Chan remarked that the HKUSU President Mr. Raymond Mak also held the same view (NB see 7 above in the Press Conference Section).
Audience's Question 1 on Democracy. Download mp3 3,533k 7:31

* 9. Audience's Question 2 on foreign relations with Russia and Communism. Because of Dr. Sun's fame, people not criticised Dr Sun's "Selling of Outer Mongolia" to Russia and other foreign powers willing to support. Download mp3 3,951k 8:25

* 10. Audience's Question 3 on revolution being violent, by Anthony Chua of Dr. Wang Bingzhang Forum on Dr. Wang's using Dr. Sun to build up his own image but is described as being a violent revolutionary, despite the fact that it is only in the 1st stage of Military Rule that violence is used. The 2nd stage of Political tutelage and 3rd stage of Constitutional Government are not violent. Under the present non-violent non-terrorist circumstance, is the image of Dr. Sun still useful for today's politicians to rely on in order to build up their own images? Prof. Chan answered that today's politicians can still use Dr. Sun's image to build up their own, if the respect for Dr. Sun remains. Using Mao Zedong's definition of revolution as not giving out a dinner, Prof. Chan defined revolution as being violent. Citing the book "Reluctant Revolutionary", Prof. Chan said that Dr. Sun is a "peaceful revolutionary", such as his resigning in favour of YUAN Shi-kai. (NB the foregoing passage 1,301k 2:46 mp3 is 自動播 automatically played on this webpage)
Anthony Chua's follow-up question on Gandhi's revolution being non-violent : Prof. Chan continued that such a peaceful revolutions such as the 1919 no-blood revoultion were not successful. In contrast, Mao's revolution is successful. To Mr Chua's follow-up question, Prof. Chan said that every definition has its own exception. ...
Audience's (Mr. Lam) Question 4 on Dr. Sun's private life. ... Download mp3 full version 2,358k 5:01
