When Frederick Ward Putnam excavated the Serpent Mound near the end of the 19th century,
he also excavated two Adena Burial Mounds in the immediate area, one of which is shown below.  He believed the Serpent Mound was thousands of years old and constructed by the Adena.  Radioactive carbon datings in 1991 gave results of about 1070 A.D., which was during the Fort Ancient period.  The evidence for Serpent Mound being a Fort Ancient effigy also includes a nearby Fort Ancient village site, a nearby Fort Ancient burial mound (the elliptical mound) and the importance of serpents in Fort Ancient art.
The Serpent mound has a paved path encircling the mound so you
can gain many
viewpoints.
Not to mention an
  observation tower.

If you visit only
one mound in Ohio, this one is at the top of the list.
The Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa.
The Alligator Mound in Ohio.
Beattie Park Mound Group in Illinois.
The Serpent Mound may be the most famous effigy mound in North America
but there are many others worth visiting such as...
Rock Eagle Mound in Georgia.
Indian Mounds Park in Wisconsin.
Bear effigies.
Bird Effigy.
An underwater panther effigy.  Obviously something got lost in translation.
A bird and a turtle effigy.
