| The Cliff Palace (discovered in 1888) before it's excavation from 1909 to 1910. Erosion from rain and looting accounts for the disarray. Walls would be knocked down for light and access. Roof beams were burned for firewood. Artifacts were stolen and sold to the highest bidder. Gustaf Nordenskiold, a Scandinavian, visited in 1891 and published The Cliff Dwellers of Mesa Verde in 1893. The book brought international attention to Mesa Verde and helped facilitate it's protection. |
