  1. What is the W3C World Wide Web Consortium?
    The W3C World Wide Web Consortium is an association that is about 1.universal access, 2. web��s semantical usage, and 3. trust on web. Its mission is to promote interoperability and encourage discussions in open forums.


  2. Terminology
    1. Cyberspace
      It is another term for Internet. Its origin is from the novel Neuromancer by William Gibson.

    2. download
      As the antonym to ��upload��, It means to transfer data/files from a computer to another(the one that you are using).

    3. upload
      It is to transfer files from the computer you are using to another. (opposite of ��download)

    4. GIF
      Graphic Interchange Format is a format for image files. It does not capture photo images as JPG

    5. JPG
      Joint Photographic Experts Group is a graphic format like the GIF

    6. PNG
      Portable Network Graphics is license-free, so anybody can use it. It has been selected by the W3C World Wide Web Consortium to replace GIF.

    7. login (as a noun and a verb)
      As a noun, it is the equivalent to your ID. It lets your computer access the web. As a verb, it is the act of connecting to the system.

    8. mailing lists (listserv and majordomo)
      Listserv, a registered trademark of L-Soft international, Inc., is a common maillist that has originated on BITNET. Majordomo, another mailing list, is run on UNIX. Its function is similar to a newsgroup but this is sent through e-mail.

    9. newsgroups
      1) What is USENET?
      It is a online-discussion group like a forum, which is called the newsgroup. Over 14,000 newsgroups form the USENET.

      2) How is USENET different from our class Discussion Board?
      The difference between the USENET and our class discussion board is that USENET is a worldwide bulletin board system. A huge number of people can access it for diverse topics.

    10. packet switching
      Like the phrase itself, it is information on the Internet divided into packets, which is moved around. These packets have separate details telling them where to go and where they��re coming from. This procedure allows them to be transferred in different routes or for different users to access the same information simultaneously.

    11. router
      Routers are devices that sort the packets between two or more networks, such as LANs. They check the address and send them to the correct destination.

    12. cookie
      Pieces of information sent by the Web Server to a Browser is called cookie. It usually includes information to customize the web page for the user, like login data.
