TAR
VALON
The
bridge
arched
straight
to
the
walls
that
surrounded
the
island,
high
walls
of
gleaming
white,
silver-streaked
stone,
whose
tops
looked
down
on
the
bridge's
height.
At
intervals,
guard
towers
interrupted
the
walls,
of
the
same
white
stone,
their
massive
footings
washed
by
the
river.
But
above
the
walls
and
beyond
rose
the
true
towers
of
Tar
Valon,
the
towers
of
history,
pointed
spires
and
flutes
and
spirals,
some
connected
by
airy
bridges
a
good
hundred
paces
or
more
above
the
ground.
And
still
only
the
beginning.
There
were
no
guards
on
the
bronze-clad
gates,
and
they
stood
wide
enough
for
twenty
abreast
to
ride
through,
opening
onto
one
of
the
broad
avenues
that
crisscrossed
the
island.
Spring
might
barely
have
come,
but
the
air
already
smelled
of
flowers
and
perfumes
and
spices.
Every
square
and
street
crossing
had
it's
fountain,
or
its
monument
or
statue,
some
atop
great
columns
as
high
as
towers,
but
it
was
the
city
itself
that
dazzled
the
eye.
What
was
plain
in
form
might
have
so
many
ornaments
and
carvings
that
it
seemed
an
ornament
itself,
or,
lacking
decoration,
used
its
form
alone
for
grandeur.
Great
buildings
and
small,
in
stone
of
every
color,
looked
like
shells,
or
waves,
or
wind-sculpted
cliffs,
flowing
and
fanciful,
captured
from
nature
or
the
flights
of
men's
minds.
The
dwellings,
the
inns,
the
very
stables
-
even
the
most
insignificant
buildings
in
Tar
Valon
had
been
made
for
beauty.
Warders
Baracks
This
is
where
the
Warders
live,
eat,
breathe,
practice,
sweat,
and
sleep.
Well
the
general
area
anyway.
Infirmerary
This
is
a
place
in
the
White
Tower,
mostly
the
domain
of
Yellow
sisters,
and
the
few
rare
other
Aes
Sedai
talented
with
healing.
Any
member
of
the
White
Tower
who
is
ailing
may
go
here
and
receive
aid,
also
Warders
come
here
to
receive
healing
from
practice
wounds,
and
to
be
practiced
on
by
the
young
women
taking
Advanced
Saidar.
*evil
grin*
The
infirmary
is
located
within
the
White
Tower.
Library
The
Library
of
the
White
Tower,
rivaling
that
of
the
Great
Library
of
Cairhairen,
this
tome
of
knowledge
stores
books
beyond
belief
and
countless
scrolls
and
reference
material
for
the
young
novice
or
Accepted
doing
her
homework,
or
for
the
inquisitive
mind
of
White
Tower
members.
There
are
sections
that
are
rumored
to
be
off
limits
to
most
everyone
excluding
Sitters
of
the
Hall,
the
Amyrilin,
and
the
Keeper
of
the
Chronicles,
though
no
one
will
say
for
sure.
However,
the
many
books
and
other
references
located
in
the
main
library
should
be
more
than
enough
to
satiate
most
people’s
appetites,
except
for
the
Brown
Sisters
and
their
aspirants.
Hall
of
the
Tower
THE
AMYRLIN'S
STUDY
The
room
was
ornate,
for
it
had
belonged
to
generations
of
women
who
had
worn
the
stole.
The
tall
fireplace
and
broad,
cold
hearth
were
all
carved
golden
marble
from
Kandor,
and
the
diamond-shaped
floor
tiles,
polished
redstone
from
the
Mountains
of
Mist.
The
walls
were
panels
of
some
pale
striped
wood,
hard
as
iron
and
carved
in
fantastic
beasts
and
birds
of
unbelievable
plumage,
panels
brought
from
the
lands
beyond
the
Aiel
Waste
by
the
Sea
Folk
before
Artur
Hawkwing
was
born.
Tall,
arched
windows
let
onto
a
balcony
overlooking
a
small
private
garden.
Ajah
Halls
Each
Ajah
has
their
own
living
quarters,
especially
set
aside
for
that
Ajah.
Although
some
would
argue
this
creates
a
sense
of
division
within
the
White
Tower,
many
sisters
will
argue
it
also
creates
a
sense
of
unity.
It
allows
for
women
of
like
mind-set
to
live
together
and
work
together-the
Browns
in
their
perpetual
study
and
absent
minded
scholariness
and
allows
the
Greens
to
have
their
afternoon
tea
in
a
jolly
setting
that
might
otherwise
be
too
rambunctious
and
emotional
for
the
White
Sister. It allows the Reds to scheme for their man-hunting philosphy,
and
the
Blues
to
plan
political
agendas.
Plus
there
are
no
rules
against
a
sister
from
another
Ajah
coming
and
visiting
another
sister
in
her
quarters,
after
all
at
the
White
Tower
we
are
all
Family.
Cellars
THE
TESTING
CHAMBER:
A
huge
domed
room
under
the
White
Tower,
carved
out
of
the
bedrock
of
the
island,
lit
by
lamps
on
tall
stands
whose
light
reflects
from
the
pale,
smooth
stone
walls.
Centered
under
the
dome
is
a
ter'angreal
made
of
three
rounded,
silver
arches,
each
just
tall
enough
to
walk
under,
sitting
on
a
thick
silver
ring
with
their
ends
touching
each
other.
Arches
and
ring
is
all
made
of
one
piece.
Inside
the
ter'angreal
the
light
flicker
oddly.
When
a
Testing
takes
place
there
will
be
three
Aes
Sedai
sitting
where
arch
touches
ring,
crosslegged
on
the
bare
stone
of
the
floor.
Another
will
be
standing
nearby,
besides
a
plain
table
where
the
three
large
silver
chalices
is
placed.
Kitchens
Ahh
yes-the
Kitchens.
By
the
time
a
woman
has
been
here
for
a
few
months
she
is
already
well
acquainted
with
the
Kitchens…
and
it’s
pots.
She
is
also
known
by
the
Mistress
of
Kitchens
on
a
very…
“intimate”
basis
one
might
say.
It’s
best
to
leave
it
at
that
the
Head
of
the
Kitchens
has
a
keen
eye
and
*knows*
when
a
pot
is
clean,
and
no
amount
of
protesting
will
change
her
mind.
The
Kitchens
themselves,
however,
are
equipped
to
serve
a
large
population
of
people,
far
more
members
than
the
White
Tower
now
holds.
No
member
of
the
Kitchen
is
Aes
Sedai,
nor
does
she
have
the
ability
to
channel
that
it
is
known
of,
at
least.
Each
cook
within
the
kitchens
has
her
own
story,
but
they
are
all
loyal
to
the
White
Tower,
and
to
her
ideology.
You
will
never
find
however
a
Kitchen
woman
mixing
in
Aes
Sedai
business….
Except
for
the
occasional
story
or
two
she
heard
from
a
friend,
who
heard
from
a
friend….
