Isaac Allerton
(1586-1658/59)

Isaac Allerton was elected assistant to Governor Bradford and was second only to Bradford in position within the Colony. Because of his negotiative abilities, he was used to procure an agreement whereby the Adventurers sold their interest in the Colony for £1800. He also was used to arrange for supplies to be brought back from England. However, in the course of this, he brought back much for his own profit, and was criticised as such by Gov. Bradford. Eventually, his self interest came to a head when he negotiated the passage of two ships the Friendship and White Angel without the knowlege or approval of the Colony. Although the White Angel carried many goods, it was headed for the Bay Colony instead of Plymouth, and the Colony was stuck with the debts. Allerton was dismissed and no longer trusted in Plymouth. Eventually he left the Colony for Connecticut. He died in New Haven,Connecticut.
