Tragedy - This double A-side with Heartbeat from Step One made STEPS get their much acheived first UK #1. Everywhere you turn there is someone raising their hands in Tragedy Shock! It was the first UK #1 of 1999 and was the biggest seller that month. It has also managed, together with the other A-Side, Hearteat, got into the all-time Top 40 UK Singles based entirely on sales since Top Of The Pops began in 1964. It managed to get #30 which is absolutely fantastic and a great achievement. Great song even though it is a cover from the BeeGees' original version. 10/10.
After The Love Has Gone - This song is basically One For Sorrow with an oriental theme and I don't think that it is as good as the #2 hit that is One For Sorrow. Good dance though, but the clothes STEPS wore when they first performed After The Love Has Gone on The Pepsi Chart on Channel 5 were dreadful but they did a good job of presenting the show! this was STEPS' worst chart position since Last Thing On My Mind, making it to #5 in the UK Singles Chart. An Instrumental Version of the song would have sounded good on the single I think. 8/10.
Love's Got A Hold On My Heart - Very summer-y and the yellow clothes compliment the song nicely. I wasn't over sure on the video though, it seemed a bit corny. Title for the song is too long and I keep running out of room when I write it down! However, video and title aside, the song is actually one of my favourite STEPS songs ever! Good dance and always gets you in good mood! 9/10.
Say You'll Be Mine - First of all: I was so pleased that everyone had something to sing as a solo on Say You'll Be Mine and just shows the group effort. Not so keen on the dance though! The vid was not bad. The whole song just seems a bit bitty and I thought I would never learn all the lyrics! The gold was a good colour and worked very nicely when STEPS performed this song in front of the Queen at the London Palladium. Not one of my favourite STEPS songs, but scores 7/10.
I Think It's Love - I am not keen on this song, it just seems a bit flat and sounds the same most of the way through, although it gives Claire a chance to show that she does have an incredible voice. Although it is similar to When I Said Goodbye, I think that When I Said Goodbye is far superior to I Think It's Love. It only gets one place up from Experienced in My Favourite STEPS Music and it scores 5/10.
Make It Easy On Me - A song by Lisa that does work extremely well when you have listened to it a few times and with a bit of fiddling about with it could make it brilliant. It scores here 8/10 as the lyrics are good and the whole song has lots of potential.
Deeper Shade Of Blue - Brilliant in every way. 10/10.
Movin' On - A cover of a Banannarama song like Last Thing On My Mind and although it is very similar to Love's Got A Hold On My Heart and you can even put the LGAHOMH dance to the lyrics of Movin' On, it is by no means a great song, but I still like it! The lyrics are quite good and you can get into it, although in certain places like on the Bridges, the vocals sound a bit restrained. 7/10.
Never Say Never Again -
When I Said Goodbye - A lovely duet by Claire and H, with the rest of STEPS doing backing vocals. I was amazed at the capability of H's voice when STEPS performed When I Said Goodbye on TV as their last single to be taken from Steptacular. It just shows how the groups voices have matured since Step One and although this song is short for a slow ballad at 3.30, it is still great! The new version is astounding and I would give it 10/10, but the album version only scores 9/10 because it could have a bit more vocal range on it like the new version.
OVERALL
Steptacular is a fine album and there are no major mistakes. My Best Friends' Girl does sound like Tragedy, but the overall sound is good, even though it is not as good as Tragedy. There are some good singles and good songs that have not been released. You can tell that more effort has been put into this album than 'Step One' and the songs sound like they have been produced better.
