**10. Any other interesting information. Their old building was "Central Baptist" at cnr Herries & Hume Sts. Baptists are very evangelical in a church / corporate way. E.G. They run Beach Missions (10 days of Sunday School in caravan parks), Vocational Bible Schools (for schools). Well attended "How to Parent Teenagers" nights advertised in secular school newsletters. All Baptist churches have many home bible study groups.
This church and many churches keep frozen meals in the freezer for those going through difficulty.
11. Time AND date. 20 June 2004 8.20am - 11am. (Was 217 people at the one service at 10am 14 May 2000. Weekly year average $2,807.) Visited 3 times old building at Herries and Hume Sts, 40 times in small groups and 30 times new building. (Numbers were between 174 and 280. 217 was an average or mean (equally distant between two extremes). i.e. There were #280ppl for Mother day special 14/5/01. 10 Dec 2000 174ppl.)

15. Feeling of building. Warm, modern brick, large.
***16. Estimate style of belief. As with almost all "Baptist Union" churches. (In the USA the word Baptist can mean anything. There are 2 types of Baptists essentially in Australia. Roughly 95% of Baptist churches are "Baptist Union" churches, not to be confused with "Independant Baptists" such as Eiser St) to which are less attended.) The Community Baptist church like all Baptist Union churches are strongly evangelical, missions orientated, small groups orientated. As with many Baptist churches there are Charismatics loosely scattered.

***AUSTRALIA IS THE 3RD WORST GIVER TO 3RD WORLD POOR. A CHURCH GIVES 10% OF THEIR OFFERING TO third world aid. GATEWAY CHURCH IN DALLAS TEXAS paid for their $8,000,000 building in cash. They grew from 200 to 8000 people in 6 years. In Africa, the aid has saved 4-5 million peoples lives. (A non-denominational church with about 50 pastors and a governing Eldership of Pastors.) However, in an official "Baptist World Aid Australia" magazine it reported that "More than 1.2 billion people live on less than $1US a day and 2.6 billion people, nearly half the world's population, live on less than $2US a day. ..... Australia was declared to have the highest per capita wealth of all the nations in the world. Yet, as a nation, our per capita giving to overseas aid is the third lowest of the 25 richest countries in the world (Only USA and Japan are lower.) - a mere 0.28% of Gross National Income - and much less than the 0.7% benchmark agreed to by member states (including Australia) of the United Nations." Editors note: It should be noted that in this entire website, for all intents and purposes, every church gives basically nothing in 3rd world AID. Again, basically nothing to the local poor either. It is certainly not reported in AGM. Common sense suggests if churches followed the Gateway Church example of giving 10% of the offering to the poor, a lot more people would give and out of this generosity, the income of the whole church increases. 13. This and other service times: 9.30am, (9am Prayer Meeting). 11am Morning Tea.
**14. Preacher: Ps Daryl Rossow (Daryl has been the pastor since approximately 1993. The church had been looking for a Pastor and tried out 16 different Pastors before asking Daryl, a long time member, to give up his secular civil engineering partnership. Baptist Pastors usually rise up from within the congregation and statistically a massive 2/3rds do not have an undergraduate Bible college diploma but possess degrees from other areas. Dr Les Ball, the academic dean from the Baptist College in the state of Queensland Australia confirmed this. He said "However, by 2013 we expect most to have an undergraduate degree and possibly a Masters as well as many are choosing this. It takes 3 years full time to do the Bachelors but you also need a 1 year full time Graduate Diploma to graduate. However, the Masters is a 2 year full time post-graduate degree and it's possible to skip the 1 year Graduate Diploma if you do the Masters.
**15. Feeling of building: Looks nice on outside but inside a smidge dowdy. All Baptist churches do well in new buildings. They were the biggest Baptist church till Community Baptists got their new building.

*16. Estimate style of belief: Ps Rossow has his church joining C.L.N. Combined Churches celebrations. 30% of the church are Charismatic said one spirit filled Youth leader. Also, Ps Daryl sought God for 3 days in a retreat as to which way the church should go and he came back and announced their church should be a missions and training church which resulted in a great many going into missions full time, particularly in Thailand. Including a medical Doctor who works there for 6 months and in the west for 6 months.
* Bill & Lynne Whyte did some lay preaching here. When tongues was preached about, a person in the church objected strongly. Bill left the church and formed "Christian Revival Centre" 9.30am Sundays 47 Flinders St. He has pastoral credentials as of 2004. Worked as a Pastor in ministry 1986 - 1991 with this large South Australian denomination. He started this house church late 2003.

13. This and other service times: 6.30pm (Note, this service was a special 6 part video series by David Pawson "The Challenge of Islam to Christians." IT'S HIGHLY RECOMMENDED VIEWING. It's not about reaching the Muslims, it's about filling the spiritual vacum in the west before the Muslims do more.) 9.30am.

9.30AM GARDEN CITY INDEPENDENT BAPTISTS Jones St Railway Yard.
(Was at Herries and Phillip Sts till mid 2004.)

**(A general rule of thumb with many religions is that there are 2 very distinct sides to any split of a denomination, 80% of them become less strict - virtually by default. 20% become more strict and they are the one's who leave the other church members behind, so in Australia you have the Baptist Union which are the majority and the Baptist Independents which are the conservative minority.)
1. # of people: 20 at Adult Sunday School 9.30am. (15 people stayed) then 23 people at 10.30am service.
2. Empty chairs: 40
3. Type of person: Parisioners told me "I was a farmer, now I'm a bobcat truck carrier." "I'm a Traffic Router." "I'm a knife hand." "I'm a supervisor at KR Bacon." " I make wood products." Like Bretheren this religion consist of ones who are strangely and predominantly workers of their hands in often a business situation. (For researchers or academics only: For further research purposes, see "RE" in the RIASEC model of Dr John Holland's theory of careers and notice strong correlation of RIASEC model of careers to actual churches.) Blue collar workers seem to be attracted to this type of religion.
4. Socio- Economic Status: Working.
5. Kids: (8)
6. Ages: 1-18
7. Men: 50%
*8. Offering: Not given. Pastor said "There is no wage coming out of the offering" which may mean he's getting paid as a missionary from his USA home church.
*9. Late arrivals: (Case in point as all these churches have big trouble keeping their numbers.) Song Leader was 5 mins late, 5p arrived 5 mins late, 4p arrived 13 mins late.
*10. Interesting info: Pastor said these rather amazing words "This is a soul winning church. We go out for 1.5 hrs Saturday mornings. I was in a (sister) Brisbane church 11 years.. In 2-3 years my plan is to have a church of 3-400. We rent this now. We're only 9 weeks old and look how many we have already. I've been naturalized a year ago having been a successful (United States) business man prior to salvation. I was only saved 12 months and God said "Go to Australia." For less than $100,000 we can get a brand new church 17m x 35m. This building costs $175,000 -has no parking. In Brisbane the minimum church building costs $210,000 but we believed God and got one for $77,000 for our 25-35 people. We're a mission minded church! .. I heard a Yank in a (sister church) but (God fore-saken church) say "Going to another church is spiritual adultery!" I don't agree. But I told my church in Brisbane "This is a dead church!" .. I was in a garage and I heard a man using God's name in vein & I said to him "Excuse me sir but I would appreciate you not saying my God's name in vein cause I'm a born again Christian." The swearing man said "So was I!" Also, in 2002, this church, the "Garden City Independent Baptists" asked "Community Baptist" from the "Baptist Union" if they could build their own church on their land. The request was denied.

11. Date & Time spent: Oct 1 2000 9am-12.32pm
12. When service finished. 11.50am
13. This & other service times: 9.30am 6pm Sun. Wedn 7pm.
14. Preacher: Ps Bartlett.
15. Feeling: I felt ill at ease due to blanket statements as Pastor was extremely confrontational to people in the church. This seems to be a denominational problem. As of mid 2004 they shifted from Herries and Phillip St to Jones St. Bartlett had asked Queensland Railways for a building and was given an old building for free rent at bottom of Jones St.
16. Their belief: Born again, non- Calvinists, fully immersed baptised, very non- Pentecostal and Pastor said there would be not one person who speaks in tongues in his church. Almost every Pastor in Qld is American! (Ps Rod Marsh in Redcliffe is Qld leader and has bible college there, is there with all American tutors in dark blue 3pce suits. They "tell" girls to go home and change at youth group if they wear jeans to church etc..)

7pm INDEPENDENT BAPTISTS WEDNESDAY 7pm service has 10 people. (A small sign of slightly over controlling church is having full church meetings on a Wednesday instead of home meetings. All Independent Baptists do this, others as well.) It's really a mini church service.

*9.30am "BIBLE TRUTH FELLOWSHIP" at GABBINBAR SCHOOL. (They say they are "just Christians" but their belief system is very unique to say the least.) Gabbinbar School grounds Stenner and MacKenzie Sts. Address the same from Dec 2000 till April 2004.

*1. NUMBER OF PEOPLE: 46.
2. NUMBER OF CHAIRS: 68.
3. Type of person: Blue collar and Accountant or Conventional. They seem a little militant somehow, in their behavior.
4. Socio-Economic Status: Low- medium. Mildly educated.
5. Amount of kids: One third are children and 18yo-22y range are in church too.
6. Ages of people: Oddly almost all 18-30yo.
7. -% are men.
8. Weekly offering published: Not given.
9. Lateness of people getting to church: Zero (Due to control).
***10. Any other interesting information: They believe no other Christian is saved unless they speak in tongues as well as go to their church only. You cannot take communion until you have been re-baptised and speak in tongues other wise "you will get heavy judgement on yourself" 1 Cor 11:29. (I was warned from the pulpit not to partake.)
11. TIME THERE AND DATE OF VISIT: 17/12/00 10.30am-5.30pm
12. Length of service: 2 1/4 hours.
13. This and other service times: 10.45am; 2.30pm For new converts. 7.30pm every WEDNESDAY (Notice how the whole church meets for this mid week meeting.) -58people 13/12/00
14. Preacher: A 53yo man. Ps Brian Griggs (paid).
15. Feeling of building: Warm but "militant". The building is a school music room.
***16. Estimate style of belief: MOST CHRISTIANS BELIEVE THERE IS ONE CHURCH WHICH BELIEVES YOU MUST SPEAK IN TONGUES IN ORDER TO BE SAVED. THIS IS NOT TRUE. THERE ARE TWO. THIS CHURCH AND "REVIVAL FELOWSHIP" IN GREGORY ST. THE TWO CHURCHES HAVE ZERO MUTUAL KNOWLEDGE OF EACH OTHER. Both churches have said they did not even know of the other's existance. Fully Charismatic, message in tongues/ interpretation, prophecy, healing, miracles. Many people reported being dramatically healed of incurable illnesses here. Note: People from other churches can get barred at the door! They resist all other churches and individuals. You can attend if you don't belong to another church. Are very good "looking" people, in a secular way.

***They are going away from 25/12/00 till middle of January for a yearly national church Caravan park camp trip at Coffs Harbour this time. I asked about adultery and John said "If that happens the Pastor would handle it but we wouldn't excommunicate them but we believe that the Lord will take the person out and they will be just "gone." I asked if I could go to a meeting and when I said "If something big comes up, then I will be there next time." Leader said "The devil will try to stop you from coming, something will happen. If you can't make it this time, you won't make it next time that's the truth cause you won't be meant to be there. I had big lust problems, my wife had the nerves, my child had asthma, when I came to the LORD I and my family got healed of everything! I'm free." If I joined their church I would have to be re-fully immersed water baptised. No question. "We've been around since the year dot." We call ourselves "The Assembly. We are not Bretheren. We are not the Revival Fellowship from Gregory St. We are worldwide. We pay a stipend to our Pastors if it's a large enough assembly.

17. Dress code so as not to stand out: Ties for men.
18. How to get there: Travel to Gabbinbar School grounds Stenner and MacKenzie Sts.

**19. ACCEPTANCE IN CHURCH AS A VISITOR: WARNING! THEY WILL ASK YOU IF YOU BELONG TO ANOTHER CHURCH AND IF YOU SAY YES THEY WILL RECOMMEND YOU NOT ATTEND THE SERVICE!
***Please note that ANY Pastor in any church willl often ask "What church do you normally attend?" DO NOT LET THIS INTIMIDATE YOU. Put on your brave face and DO NOT get in a tussle with the Pastor over any seemingly regimentry point of view. So say something like "I do attend such and such a church but making a change is not inconceivable." Or "I have been to such and such a church in the past." Or "I am not a member in any church." Or "I don't regularly go to any church and have been looking for awhile now." See FAQ's for more.
20. People who talked to me after the service: I was stared at as I was new. The preacher said hello.
21. Length of time they talked: 1 min to 7 minutes.
22. How soon do visitors get talked to after service?: Almost straight away.
*23. HOW MUCH CHURCH IS OPEN TO WIDER CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY: Zero openness. They do not say it but they give the feeling your not saved unless you belong to their church. They never advertise their meetings.
***24. Unusual things about worship: THIS IS A CHURCH WHERE SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS almost mandatory. They will ask you to face the back of your seat for 5 mins on your knees and as a church, all pray in tongues mid way in the service. (It's generally accepted practice, if you can't pray in tongues, then pray softly in English.)

40. Dowdiness of building outside: Not bad. You can park in the front or rear carpark and follow the people around through a maze of buildings to the music room. At the end of the service they put all the class desks back etc..
