The Fujita Scale

The Fujita Scale, also known as the Fujita-Pearson Scale
measures the size of tornadoes by linking the amount of
damage it causes to the tornado's wind speed. This system was
presented in 1971 by Professor Fujita and Allen Pearson,
director of NSSFC allowing a standard to be used in tornado
measurements. The following are the F ratings to measure the
intensity of a tornado along with it wind speed, usual
damage, and frequency precentage.

F0 Tornado

commonly termed a Gale tornado, wind speed ranges from 40-
72 mph and damage such as to chimneys, broken tree branches,
up-rooted shallow trees, damage to sign boards. F0 tornadoes
occur 29% of the time.

F1 Tornado

commonly termed a Moderate tornado, wind speed ranges from
73-112 mph and damage such as roof decking removed, cars and
carports over-turned, trees up-rooted, mobile homes moved off
foundation. F1 tornadoes occur 40% of the time.

F2 Tornado

commonly termed a Significant tornado, wind speed ranges from
113-157 mph and damage such as roofs blown away, only stong
walls left standing, weak building destroyed, mobile homes
flipped, small wooden debris missiles. F2 tornadoes occur 22%
of the time.

F3 Tornado

commonly termed a Severe tornado, wind speed ranges from
158-206 mph and damage such as exterior walls and roofs are
blown away, severe damage to metal buildings, mobile homes
obliterated, forests flattend. F3 tornadoes occur 6% of the
time.

F4 Tornado

commonly termed a Devastating tornado, wind speed ranges from
207-260 mph and damage such as few walls left standing, large
concrete and steel missiles, cars carried good distances,
usually only debis left behind. F4 tornadoes occur 2% of the
time.

F5 Tornado

commonly termed a Incredible tornado, wind speed ranges from
261-318 mph and damage such as all walls removed, cars and
trees as missiles, only reinforced buildings remain. Total
destruction. F5 tornadoes occur 1% of the time.
