Weaving is a spiritual activity where a weaver interacts with his/her loom using tools as intermediaries between this world and the spiritual world to create a textile of intellectual being.  The Bee'adizi, spindle, is an important tool.  With it, one can transform raw fibers of nature into something useable.  One uses the bee'adizi to spin fiber into yarn and to ply yarn.  The Bee'ak'initlish, batten, is an extension of the weaver's hand and arm and used to separate the warp strings from each other and sometimes to beat down weft or warp. The Bee'adzoo'i, comb/fork/beater, is an extension of the weaver's hand to push down yarns in certain areas especially in tapestry weaving.  The 1st comb created had 5 fingers.  Since then, combs are made of various numbered fingers.  There are specialized tools made and all tools are used in Navajo ceremonies.  They bless the weaver and weaver's family, home and land.

Coming from generations of Navajo tool makers, Mark H. Deschinny continues the tradition of making weaving tools.  All Deschinny tools are individually hand-cut, hand-grinded, hand-sanded and finely finished for a superb feel and protection for generations of weaving.  Mostly using Red Oak(RO) and Hickory(H), Mark H. Deschinny does use locally harvested Navajo woods such as the Shrub Oak, Holly and Juniper when in stock.

BEE'ADZOO'I Comb, Fork, Beater

Whether you need a comb for finishing, for starting a rug, for fine weaving, for learning how to weave or for special purposes, Deschinny has the comb for you.  Comb fingers come in various fineness from Fine, Classic, Student and Saddle Blanket.  Handle-ends are pointed for easy yarn pick up.  All combs are treated to a Seven-Point Hand Sanding process to remove ALL sharp or rough edges from damaging warp strings.  Most big combs are made with 3/4" thick wood for weight.  Medium size combs use 1/2" thick wood.  Finishing combs use 3/8" thick wood or even 1/4" thick wood.

BEE'AK'INITL'ISH Batten

Battens are made to various widths and shapes for starting a rug, finishing a rug, sashbelt weaving, cinch weaving, Puebloan/Hopi style weaving or for use in a ceremony.  Most battens are made with a slight bend except for finishing battens/needles, sashbelt battens and Puebloan/Hopi weaving battens.  The bottom edge of the battens are tapered and the top edge is squared.  The Bend and Squared Edge minimize batten slippage while weaving.

BEE'ADIZI Spindle

The traditional tool used to spin various fibers into yarns and to ply yarns.  Deschinny spindles are known to be very balanced and constructed of Red Oak(RO) for generations of spinning.  Tip of spindle shaft is tapered and the bottom shaft is pointed for minimal drag when spinning.
