Robert E. Howard's Conan series will make your blood rush and your nose flare with adreniline. Our modern civilization has trained men well, but deep down in man's instinctive nature is the desire to command his own destiny through conquest and war. Conan is everything you could expect in a pre-historic barbarian and pirate. Read all the Howard series. If you want a watered down version, read the Jordan books, too.
The legendary ruins of the Lost City of Zinj have seen an eight-person field exhibition die. After startling discoveries, a new expedition is sent back into the Congoits mission, to descend into the secret world where the only way back out may be through the grisliest death.... Great book! Movie sucked. They took out all the best parts, then made the movie. Read it!
"Set on the desert planet Arakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family - and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream. A blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction." I've read this 4 times and still find stuff. If you read the whole series, it will definitely mess with your perspective of time and space.
1780: Seventeen-year-old Alan Lewrie is a brash, rebellious young libertine. So much so that his callous father believes a bit of navy discipline will turn the boy around. Fresh aboard the tall-masted Ariadne, Midshipman Lewrie heads for the war-torn Americas, findingrather unexpectedlythat he is a born sailor, equally at home with the randy pleasures of the port and the raging battles on the high seas. But in a hail of cannonballs comes a bawdy surprise. . . . Best high seas adventure series that I've read yet. My kinda character!
Monumental devastation will sweep across the globe if the newly discovered Hamner-Brown comet collides with the one major obstacle in its path: Earth. For millionaire Tim Hamner, the comet is a ticket to immortality. For filmmaker Harvey Randall, it's a shot at redeeming a flagging career. And for astronauts John Baker and Rick Delanty, it's a second chance for glory in outer space. But for a world gripped by comet fever, fascination quickly turns to fear. And only those who survive the impact will know the even greater terror, when rich and poor, politicians and killers, turn to each other or against each other - and the remnants of humanity grow savage to battle for what little remains... INTENSE!

Long ago, the Storyteller claimed, in this first book of THE BELGARIAD, the evil god Torak drove men and Gods to war. But Belgarath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected men of the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe. But Garion did not believe in such stories. Brought up on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, how could he know that the Apostate planned to wake dread Torak, or that he would be led on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger by those he lovedbut did not know...? I love the personalities in this series. Eddings is a master of bonding the reader to his characters.

A mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary in the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father. Kahlan seeks help ... and more. Richard's world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence. In a dark age when it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold ominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims. Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the beat of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them -- for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not tell him. In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword -- to involke within himself something more noble. Neither knows the rules of battle have just changed ... or that time has run out. This is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend. I cannot recommended this book enough! A must for any fantasy readers!
