|
In western Turkey takla is know as Mardin. As you might know, this is a difficult concept to explain to the traditional fanciers of the eastern Turkey. And they are right. It might be that today taklas in most fanciers loft look the same but, this was not the case always. They are few in numbers but, even today it is possible to run into master breeders who keep birds true to their origins.
In this section of the site I am going to give a brief description of differences on each major region's taklas. These might be seen as unimportant differences for most fanciers but, I think there are still a few fanciers out there who value these qualities |

This breed, besides being physically the largest of them all, comes in colors of only dirty blue, blue, silver blue, smokey, black self and white selfs. Its head is never decorated. |

Specialty of Urfa is it carries its wings below the tail. Its head is almost cornered, forehead curves outwards, and in blacks have a featherless ring around the eyes. Urfa comes in same colors as Mardin but also comes in what we call "a�ik" (open) and in most areas of Turkey called Sabuni.
This breed is considered to be the father of many Russian breeds. Today in Russia there are birds with very similar looks kept with Urfainsky name.
It is very difficult to find Urfa in its pure shape today.
There are still some traditional fanciers keep this bird and in my opinion they are a priceless variety of taklas. |

Hennaed brown checks (red or yellow chest, aka. Miski), silver checks (aka. �akmakli) and "a�ik" (red or yellow chested pastel brown bar, aka. Sabuni) colors are all products of this city. Both miski and a�ik were developed from browns and the �akmakli from blues. The main difference of the Sivas is its small head compared to other breeds. As far as performance goes, it flies less hours than both Mardin and Urfa but plays much more frequently. The distance of its dive from the ground is the lowest of all taklas. A good Sivas should dive and sweep the ground with its tail, without touching with its legs, for a while before starting its climb. Eventhough it plays much more frequently than the former two, its combinations (tumble and climb and repead) are shorter then them. Sivas also comes with beak rose frequently. |

It is the smallest of them all. Head, body and wings everything is smaller and shorter. Beak is skinnier and smaller than others almost like doves. However this size difference is not that literal. If seen by it self it can be mistaken for others. This breed comes in all colors but what we call g�m�s ( a version of DeRoy) and brown. However, all these colors come in a dusty shade in Ankara. Blues are very similar to wild type and blacks never bright but a lighter tone of black almost like a black bar dun. Yellows, reds and others come in ash and never with clear white feathers on the wing or the tail.
The most importand quality of Ankara is its performance:
Its tumbles are very hard and quick. Between each tumble there is a very little climb, infact if looked carefully, there is a slight altitude loss after each tumble. Ankara performs harder than any breed in Turkey. Its combinations shorter than all but full of tumbles. Good bloodlines must get daily exercise or tehy become unable to fly from tumbling.
With its extreme performance and sympathetic looks Ankara is my favorite breed of takla. |

Unfortunately, today this breed can not be founf in Turkey and exists only in Syria and Iraq. It was introduced to these countries during the Seljuk ruling and in time by crossing with other takla breeds disappeared in Antalya.
This breed in general has a narrower body than others and has longer neck and legs.
Its specialty is its bright colors (comes in all colors) and rosed head (beak rose, head crest and double crested). It is not a great performer and will not charge the coop. It plays in the air and flies high. Like Urfa it preffers to fly fast and alone. |

Diyarbakir |

|
|
This one is a chubby kind of takla with relatively shorter neck and legs. Its body unlike most pigeon breeds flat looking from front almost and ellipse, horizontally wider. Diyarbakir comes in all colors in most bright colors. Its head ornaments also come in different shapes. Beak crest, rose besides coming in traditional shape, comes in different shapes as a coin rose similar to Bokhara Trumpeters or side swap like a cow lick, brushed to one side of the face. Head crest extends from cheak to cheak and some times has a culr at the tip bending towards the beak. Muffs can be short, just covering the toes or as long as several inches. As far as the performance goes Diyarbakir is not very competitive. Eventhough, it is a fairly good performer, it's raised primarily for its looks. Diyarbakir also is a region of Turkey where many tumbler looking breeds raised for their physical qualities or voices. |

This is a clean leged breed that only comes in grizzled colors. It is not a popular breed out side of �orum due to its unatractive colors. However, it is one of the best performing takla breeds there. |
