(7-0)

Goliath destroyed David in a battle of two of the top teams in Dade County. Miami High(MHS),ranked no.1 among the big schools, took control against small school no.3 Northwest Christian(NC) in the first quarter, building a 12 point lead behind the inside dominance of Udonis Haslem who got Northwest Christian big man Djahaue Rodrigue in early foul trouble. MHS built its lead to 15 before the visitors took advantage of an extended time on the bench for Haslem and MHS point guard Steven Blake. NC cut the deficit to five late in the second quarter before a Jemel Davila three pointer stemmed the tide. The third quarter was a highlight reel for MHS. At the forefront was Sylbrin Robinson who dominated defensively by blocking several shots and creating many turnovers. Offensively, Antonio Lattimer nailed three 3-pointers from the top of the key and Steven Blake assisted on a number of scores. At the end of the quarter the issue of who was going to win was no longer in doubt.

Steven Blake and Jemel Davila combined for 15 first quarter points in helping Miami High build a 42-8 first half lead. Antonio Lattimer led all scorers with 13 points. Udonis Haslem rested his injured ankle for a semi-final game with Provo(Utah). Kamehameha's frustration resulted in 10 intentional fouls being called on the local team. Kamehameha player, Jacob Ordenstein was ejected for throwing a punch at Miami High's Antonio Latimer. The post-game fight broke out when Kamehameha player Puni Ellis chased a Miami High player toward the locker room. Miami High's Daniel Dieudonne reportedly decked Ellis leaving him bloodied. The tone for the game was set when Miami High's Javorie Wilson was punched on the back of the head on Miami High's first shot of the game. All-Tournament selection Steven Blake iced the game by making four of five free throws in the final quarter. Also making the all-tourney team was Antonio Latimer who led MHS with 19 points and three steals. Sylbrin Robinson had his best offensive performance of the season with 14 points and 8 rebounds. January 1, 1998
Miami High-77 Fort Lauderdale Dillard-44
(15-1)

In a battle of two of the best teams in the state Miami High proved too big and too physical for Dillard which was basically reduced to a two man team. Despite a combined 38 points from Dillard's outstanding guard tandem of Kenyon Dooling and Clarence Gilbert, the Panthers could only muster 6 points from the rest of their team. The Stingarees meanwhile had four players in double figures in jumping out to a 37-22 halftime lead. Leading the way was Antonio Lattimer with 19 points, 9 rebounds and four blocked shots. Udonis Haslem added more inside muscle with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Miami High dominated Dillard 55-28 on the boards. On the perimeter Steven Blake and Jemel Davila combined for 29 points including 7 three pointers. January 2, 1998
Miami High-66 Killian-53
(16-1)

In a battle between two final four participants from a year ago, Miami High's depth and simply was too much for Killian. A weary MHS struggled to a 29-27 halftime lead, but their 11-deep roster turned on the pressure in the second half. Leading the charge was University of Florida bound Udonis Haslem who scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half. Joining Haslem in double figures was his future teammate at Florida, Sylbrin Robinson, who scored 13 points. The Stings have now played 12 games in 17 days and traveled more than 10,000 miles playing in tournaments in Hawaii, Boston and Boca Raton. Coach Frank Martin flatly stated that his team was "dragging" in reference to their lethargic play. Chief among those who struggled was point guard Steven Blake who went 0-8 from the floor against the team he led to the state semis last year. The Stingarees now face Deerfield Beach, the defending 5A state champs, in the championship game of the Wilt Chamberlain Rising Star Shootout.

Miami High-66 Deerfield Beach-54
(17-1)

Two-time defending 6A state champion Miami High defeated scrappy defending 5A state champ Deerfield Beach in the championship game of the Wilt Chamberlain Rising Stars Shootout. The Stingarees used their size advantage while the Bucks countered with effective full court pressure. Deerfield Beach managed to trail only 31-29 at the half despite missing three starters due to injury. Sylbrin Robinson kept the Stingarees up in the first half with 10 points and 4 rebounds. The Stingarees weary from a demanding holiday schedule managed to turn up the intensity in the second half although the Bucks did close to whithin six with just under three minutes to go. Tournament MVP Udonis Haslem scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter as the Stingarees took a double figure lead. In a sour note Miami High's Robinson aggravated a foot injury and it is unknown if he will miss any games because of it.

Miami High-70 Fort Lauderdale Dillard-48
(22-1)

For the second time in two weeks Miami High crushed Dillard behind a dominating defense and superior depth. Although not outrebounding Dillard as decisively as in the first encounter, MHS was still the far superior team inside. Sylbrin Robinson was outstanding with 11 points and numerous blocks and rebounds. The Stingarees' other two big men, Udonis Haslem and Antonio Lattimer combined for 30 points. The Panthers actually were in the ballgame until MHS began to pull away in the third quarter. Dillard led 24-22 with 3:30 left in the half and trailed only 33-28 at halftime. However, by the end of the third quarter Miami High led 51-36. Once again Dillard was a two man show as Kenyon Dooling and Clarence Gilbert combined for 33 of the team's 48 points.

Robinson scored 8 points in the second quarter to key an 18-1 run that produced a 38-16 halftime lead for the Stingarees. MHS connected on a season high 13 three-pointers as Columbus concentrated on its interior defense. The Stingarees built a 51-24 first half lead behind big men Udonis Haslem and Sylbrin Robinson who combined for 25 first half points. Haslem finished with 14 points and eight rebounds and Antonio Lattimer added 7 points and 13 rebounds. February 05, 1998
@Miami High-80 Killian-36
(26-1)

Miami High advanced to the championship game of the GMAC tournament by crushing Killian in a semi-final game. The Cougars were handicapped by the loss of their best player, William Copeland, who was sidelined by a shoulder injury. With Copeland the Cougars lost to MHS by only 13 earlier in the year. Without him, his overmatched teammates managed to stay in the game for one quarter. A three point shot by Killian guard David Perez from just inside half-court at the buzzer made the score 12-11 in favor of MHS. Killian then scored the first basket of the second quarter to take its first and only lead at 13-12. The Stingarees outscored Killian 25-11 for the remainder of the second quarter to take a 13 point halftime lead. The third quarter was all Miami High as they outscored the Cougars 30-6, to increase their lead to 67-30. A running clock in the fourth quarter prevented the score from being even uglier. MHS was led by Udonis Haslem with 20 points and Sylbrin Robinson, who contributed 13 points in addition to his usually suffocating defense. Jemel Davila added three three-pointers, all coming in the second half. MHS point guard Steven Blake was held pointless against his former team. Miami High next plays Norland in the GMAC final.

February 06, 1998
Miami High-85 Norland-48
(27-1)

Miami High captured the GMAC championship for the second consecutive year by crushing Norland, Dade County's number two ranked team. Despite the absence of starting point guard Steven Blake, who missed the game because of a thumb injury, the Stingarees rolled into the postseason on a high note. Like the Killian game yesterday it took MHS a few minutes to get untracked. After racing out to a 10-1 lead, Norland closed to 13-10 with two minutes left in the first quarter. However, a 9-0 run to close out the quarter left MHS with a double figure lead that they would maintain throught the remainder of the game. The key performer for MHS was Jemel Davila who had been in coach Frank Martin's doghouse for his inability to understand the team concept. Davila got the start and produced a team high 24 points which are the most points he has scored at MHS. He connected on 9 of 15 shots including 6 of 9 from three-point land. Davila has now connected on 9 three-pointers in his last couple of games. MHS begins district play on Friday in a semi-final game against a yet to be determined opponent.
