Why Hate FUNimation?

Author: Kalika

Date: July 21, 2001

Alright, before I begin to really write this editorial, I'm just going to get a few points across. 1. This is my first editorial, so I warn you now, it may suck. 2. Don't think I'm a big fan of FUNi or anything, I just get sick of people never taking into account the positivity of the work they do on Dragonball. 3. There are a lot of negative things I could say with this, but for the purpose of this editorial, I'm only mentioning the positive.

It really annoys me every time I go to a Dragonball Site, and most of their site pertains to insulting FUNimation, rather than information on the series. If they're so displeased with the work being done, they should get a petition together and send it to FUNi. And if they already did that, then they shouldn't start bashing the company again. They do listen. For example, Dragonball is going to have a lot of the origional Japanese music. So why do people persistantly try to convince the entire internet that FUNi 'sucks ass' or 'is a pile of crap'? Why not just forget about their work and go back to buying fansubs?

No matter how hard anyone tries to improve a company's work on Dragonball Z, it's quite obvious there are always going to be errors and nitpicking that will remain. So why hate the one company that tries their hardest to bring Dragonball to North America? Had FUNimation not produced the english subtitled version of Dragonball, I'd never have become interested in the series. Some people are just huge anime fans, and know about Dragonball naturally. I had heard many people talking non-stop about it, but as I had no way of viewing the series or reading the manga, I never caught on until later. When I was watching TV one morning before school, I caught a few seconds of the series before I had to leave. I liked the animation, and it was enough to get me interested. And although I hate to admit it, without FUNi, I'd probably see anime as 'just cartoons'.

Although the work they do on the series isn't too impressive, they can definatly get people interested in the series. I admit, for about one week, I was a huge dubbie, and I'd even have to ask me friends pathetic questions, such as "What's a Kuririn?". But I got over it. As there are a lot of pages on the internet that go beyond what a dubbie would know, it's easy to get out of that stage. Even if not everyone that enjoys FUNi's version of Dragonball learns enough about the series to educate others, that's still a lot of people who can help with the 'next generation' of Dragonball fans.

Lately, a lot of really good Dragonball sites have been closing down due to loss of interest or time. Without these sites, it'll be harder for people to learn what they want about the series. There are a lot of good sites left, but they can't last forever. With FUNimation attracting new viewers, more sites will be built, strengthening the Dragonball community. And all we have to do is smite all the sites that are run by misinformed dubbies. Or just try to further educate them on Dragonball.

Okay, so it seems that I've gone slightly off topic, but I think that I got my point across. Of course, me being me, I'd doubt it. Basically, what I want to say, is that it's a waste of time to keep bashing FUNimation for their work on Dragonball Z. At least they're trying their hardest on the series, and letting a new generation become interested in the series, and probably in all anime. They may just be dubbies at first, but with the internet being as wide as it is, it won't be long before they themselves come to know the true extent of Dragonball. And they'll probably have some FUNi bashing of their own to do.
