New operas, commissions, plays, video, intermedia and performance works will highlight offerings of experimental intermedia art at the Nobles eXperimental interMedia Studio.  Presented by Metro State’s Program in Experimental Music and Intermedia Art, the festival continues its tradition of offering cutting-edge performances in the casual setting of a converted manufacturing facility.  Most programs begin at 8 pm and suggested donations are $8/$5* at the door.

 

The featured artists, groups and events include:

 

Sonic Circuits IX – Videos and electronic music from the ninth international festival of electronic music and video art organized by the American Composers Forum will be presented throughout the festival before and after all festival events.

Freedom From – Nobles “First-timer” and rock producer Mathew St. Germain curates three big evenings of odd-ball intermedia hijinx and all out amp/blow improvs. * $10 donation for series ticket.

Ourobouros (MN) –Premier showing of multiple monitor video installation that explores how the September 11th terrorist attacks were felt by individuals; presented by Stephen Rife and the St. Paul Artists Forum.

John O’Brien Quintet (MN) – the composer of “Life at Night” brings his quintet to Nobles for an evening of original music; with John O'Brien, Trumpet, Flueglehorn and horn electronics; Casey O'Brien, Bass; Alan Ernst, Piano; Erich Hofmeister, Drums; and Park Evans, Guitar.

Friday, March 8th  at 8 p.m.

 

True West – Jeremy Frandrup directs and acts in the Sam Shepard play with Terry Daniel, Wade Barry and Pam Kaufman.

Wednesday - Saturday, March 20th 21st, 22nd  & 23rd at  8 p.m.

 

Mark Garcia (MN) – The composer-performer premiers “Time is the Conqueror”, a musical collage of dreams and escape by Mark A. Garcia & one Talking Shoe.

Friday-Saturday, March 29th and  30th at 8 p.m.

 

Flaneur Productions (MN) – the local theater company presents a 'work in progress' performance of Jim Bovino’s  new play  Soft Sleepers. Soft Sleepers is a meditation on the meeting point of death, time, and power. Set in a post-apocalyptic dream world, Soft Sleepers explores the question of what happens when we wake up to find that the possibilities for the future are limited by the experiences we had in the past. Charged by an original score by composer/musician Rich Barlow, and set and light design by visual artist Nate Cutlan, Soft Sleepers envelopes the audience in a world where cause and effect stare helplessly at one another across the debris of history. This production promises to leave audiences asking questions about the solidity of every day experience, and the inevitability of progress.

Wade Kolada (MN) – The composer-improviser creates an evening of new music with his band - Wade Kolata - alto sax & guitar, Satoshi Shinozaki - guitars & flute, Shige Miura - guitars, percussion, shower curtain rod, etc., Brian Baker - tenor sax & percussion.

Friday, April 5th at 8 p.m.

 

Georgia Stephens (MN) – Premiers the first section of Xpiration Date, and reprises her 1993 duo Dr. Lucci Learns To Waltz with John Munger.

Friday, April 12th at 8 p.m.

 

Fred Ho (NYC) – The composer-performer and arts activist returns with urgent new music performed with keyboardist Carei Thomas, laptop artist Steve Goldstein and oddball guitarist Davis Menas.

Ron George and The Nobles experimental interMedia Group The Group joins the composer and guest artists in the world premier of George’s American Composers Forum “Composers Commissioning Project”, funded by the Jerome Foundation.

Final Nobles Farewell Party and Ritual Ceremony  - Last good-bys and a reunion of artists, audience and guests sending in sounds and images from around the world.

Sunday, April 28th from 4 – 8 p.m.

 

The Strange Attractors VIII Festival will highlight offerings of experimental intermedia art in the Nobles eXperimental interMedia Studio. Metro alum and founder of the Freedom From label, Mathew St. Germain, will guest curate the first three Fridays in February as a mini-fest of oddball art rock.  California Composer Ron George will premier his commissioned work for microtonal voices and instruments featuring the Nobles eXperimental interMedia Group on April 26th.  Ron’s new work was awarded the commission through the American Composers Forum Composers Commissioning Program, with funding from the Jerome Foundation.  Local writer-choreographer Georgia Stephens will premier part of Xperation Date, a newly-commissioned work, along with a reprise of “Dr. Lucci Learns To Waltz”, a 1993 dance-theater piece for Ms. Stephens and John Munger, on April 12th.   Works for stage include Jeremy Frandrup’s production of Sam Shepard’s play “True West”, and Flanuer Productions’ showing of Jim Bovino’s new play “Soft Sleepers”.

 

Wade Kolada and John O’Brien bring in their bands, and  Fred Ho will return to offer new music and texts with Carei Thomas, Davis Menas and Steve Goldstein.  Finally We give our final farewell to the Nobles space on Sunday, April 28th with contributions from artists around the world who have created works in Nobles.
