Wenlock Edge
| Wenlock Edge is an escarpment that runs, north-east to
south-west between Much Wenlock and Craven Arms in Shropshire. The rock is
Silurian in age.
This great tree-clad escarpment runs for 16 miles across Shropshire, a massive limestone ridge shelving steeply on its western face to the patchwork fields of Ape dale, and on its eastern side sloping gently into the lovely Corve dale. The National Trust owns an eight mile stretch, about 600 metres wide. |

Near Much Wenlock it is composed of reef limestone yielding the
typical coral reef fauna: Various corals, stromatoparoids, brachiopods,
bryozoans and if you are lucky, trilobites. The rock changes to softer
shale as you pass along the Edge.
Amongst the woodlands are the remains of the ancient Long Forest. Along the length of Wenlock Edge valleys alternate with hill-tops with sudden descents and rises giving splendid views westwards towards the Welsh mountains. |
| Disused quarries pepper the northern section, and near
Lilleshall Quarry is Ippikin’s Rock, a projecting crag which gives good
views towards the Stretton Hills.
According to legend, Ippikin was a notorious robber who lived in a cave in the cliff. A landslide buried the cave and its hoard of stolen goods, and the ghost of Ippikin still stands guard ready to push over the cliff anybody who approaches his treasure. |

For over the last 100 years Dormouse populations in
Britain have dramatically declined, mainly due to the loss and
fragmentation of their woodland habitat.
Shropshire is a key county for Dormice, but they are particularly vulnerable here. As one of the largest areas of continuous ancient woodland in Shropshire, Wenlock Edge is a major stronghold for Dormice. The management of the woodland has resulted in scattered areas of hazel coppice, amongst old mixed woodland with frequent honeysuckle and bramble - an ideal habitat for Dormice. |
The natural
attractions of Wenlock Edge are increased by the human handiwork it
displays with ancient earthworks and quiet country churches. |
