Chilterns Basecamp
| Name: Chilterns Basecamp | ![]() |
| Location: Ashridge Estate, Hertfordshire. | |
| The Chilterns Basecamp consists of two fully converted
19th Century barns.
These barns are tucked away in secluded woodland near Aldbury, on the 4000 acre Ashridge Estate of woodlands, commons, and chalk downland in the Chiltern Hills. The larger of the two barns houses the living accommodation. |

This barn includes a dining area, which is the
largest room at the basecamp and also acts as the area used for
relaxation.
There are two doors from this room which open to the outside giving a very pleasant view over the surrounding fields. This building also includes the toilets and showers, and the pay phone is also here. At the end of the building is a drying room. |
| The kitchen if well equipped with a large gas cooker
(bottled gas), a huge fridge and a smaller freezer.
There are plenty of saucepans, cooking utensils, plates, cutlery etc. There are two large sinks and plenty of work surface area for food preparation. Heating throughout the basecamp is by electric convector heaters. |

The smaller barn houses the two dormitories.
Each dormitory has five pairs of bunk beds, so in total the basecamp can accommodate up to 20 people. There are plenty of storage shelves in the dormitories and plenty of coat hooks on the walls. Pillows are not provided at this basecamp and visitors have to bring their own. |
| The basecamp was opened in 1988 and is situated on a
former clay pit for local brick manufacturers.
Prior to renovation the barns were used for general storage purposes. The barns are surrounded by fields and woodland and at the back of largest barn is an area used for barbeques. |

The basecamp is perfectly adequate, but it is not one of the best. Having the basecamp split between two buildings is obviously not the ideal situation and the lack of a comfortable area to relax is disappointing. By the end of an evening the wooden benches around the dining table start to feel very hard. |
