Wilde, Matt 8 QB 5 Jr. 6'2" 200 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Henne ends up with 202 of 339 for 2256 yards, 20 TDs, 18 sacks and 7 interceptions; this gave him an efficiency rating of 130.83 (7th in the Big Ten and 46th nationally) and plus/minus of +13. Our scoring offense and total offense (49th nationally) were ranked 9th and 8th in the Big Ten respectively. Our red zone offense ranked 7th and 3rd down efficiency was 8th in the Big Ten.

Coach Scot Loeffler has done a nice job recruiting and developing our quarterbacks, and Offensive Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach, Terry Malone, is "hot and cold" with his play calling. His red zone play calls have been particularly suspect.

Gutierrez was 14 for 22 for 133 yards, 7 rushes and two sacks for 3 net yards in a limited back up role (EMU and Indiana). Antonio Bass was 1 of 1 for 13 yards. Forcier redshirts as Kastl was our 3rd quarterback. Steve Breaston and Antonio Bass both appeared at quarterback this season in the red zone in an effort to keep defenses off balance.

Van Beek, Eric 49 FB-H Back 5 Fr. 5'11" 229 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Thompson caught 2 TD passes in 6 total catches for 41 yards. Since we don't have fullbacks at Michigan; Will Paul is our "blocking Ram" in short yardage and Red Zone. Paul started against Northwestern, Indiana and Ohio State, and Mike Massey also saw action at "blocking back." Oluigbo hasn't played much at all in 11 games. None of our "blocking backs" have carried the ball this season. An offensive scheme that only uses one running back is an incomplete scheme.

Tailback
Hart/Grady/Jackson/Bass/Bradley

Eldridge, Jason 44 TB 8 Sr. 5'8" 184 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Hart netted 588 net yards in 131 attempts, 4 TDs plus 14 catches for 119 yards and one TD. Grady netted 466 net yards on 116 carries with 5 TDs; he also has caught 14 passes for 113 yards. Jerome Jackson has 228 yards on 54 carries with a game winning TD against Iowa plus 2 other TDs. Jackson twisted his ankle during Ohio State week, and didn't play a down. Martin didn't play much after his fumble against Iowa, and his costly fumble at Wisconsin; he netted 226 net yards on 53 carries and 2 TDs. Alijah Bradley had 19 carries for 83 yards. Coach Fred Jackson has done a nice job developing our running backs, but the scheme that uses only one of two backs as an offensive threat is suspect. Notre Dame has knocked out our starting tailback two years in a row.

Comments: Super Mario Manningham had 24 catches for 405 yards, and 5 TDs plus 5 runs for 37 yards. His backup, Steve Breaston had 25 catches for 283 yards plus 2 TDs (one 52 yarder against Iowa), and ran for 104 yards in 9 carries; he also had 22 punt returns for 284 yards and 19 kickoff returns for 500 yards and 1 TD against Minnesota. Dutch had 4 catches for 34 yards after appearing in 6 games, and 2 punt returns for 9 yards.

Comments: First Team All Big Ten, Jason Avant led our team with 74 catches for 936 yards and 8 TDs; he ranks 11th nationally in receptions and 23rd in receiving yardage. Tabb had 12 catches for 96 yards and got his first start as a Wolverine against Minnesota. Arrington redshirts this season after his ankle injury. Bass has seen action at wide receiver, tailback and quarterback, and had 5 catches for 40 yards, 16 carries for 77 yards, one of one in passing for 13 yards and two fumbles. Savoy redshirts, and may move to safety in Spring. When Avant leaves, there will be an open position in 2006, perhaps Greg Mathews and/or Percy Harvin will sign to be in competition for starter.

Butler, Carson 85 TE 4 Fr. 6'4" 245 Recruit 4.6 n/a n/a n/a 2.9

Comments: Ecker had 20 catches for 214 yards and 1 TD. Massaquoi had 11 catches for 86 yards, and is injured so he may not play in the Alamo Bowl. Massey had 6 catches for 33 yards and one TD against Northwestern. 37 catches from the Tight End position in 11 games with two TDs isn't much of a contribution. I think Coach Malone could do a better job involving the tight end appropriately in plays and play calling. If one considers the one dimensional approach by Malone with not involving the tight end or blocking back, we limit our skill players to 4 with 7 blockers. This approach is easy for defenses to prepare for, and to limit our effectiveness. We are simply a mediocre offense with our best skill players underutilized. Carson Butler redshirts, and should contribute next year.

Comments: 1st Team All Big Ten Matt Lentz had a solid year, and Carr called his a "champion" after the Penn State win. Ciulla is seeing playing time at both guard positions, but Mitchell is the first back up with Kraus out. Schifano redshirts.

Comments: Kraus did a good job as starter, but went down at Northwestern with a sprained knee and hasn't played since; he will play in the Alamo Bowl. Bihl did a good job starting in Kraus' absence. Sharrow did see some action against Indiana. McAvoy redshirts after back surgery, but did play against Indiana unless it was really Saigh playing as they have the same number. Moosman had shoulder surgery January 7th and also redshirts.

Offensive Line Coach, Andy Moeller, has done a nice job keeping this group together and improving despite injuries. Team averaged 164.5 net rushing yards per game, and this ranked us 8th in the Big Ten and 40th nationally. In our losses, we netted 34 against the Bucks, 94 against the Gophers, 114 against the Irish and 143 against the Badgers. Teams recognize that if they can stop our run, and force us to beat them in the air, they have a chance. We really must improve in this area as we recruit and maintain more offensive lineman than any other position on the team. We typically have 18 offensive lineman or 21% of our allotted 85 scholarships. If a player goes down to injury, we must develop adequate replacements in a long 12 game season. Other teams face the same problem, and there are 7 other Big Ten teams doing better than us rushing the football. We only had 15 rushing touchdowns, the only two teams who did worse was Illinois and Indiana at 9 TDs each. Minnesota rushed for 34 TDs, Purdue had 31, Penn State and Wisconsin had 27 each.

Comments: Alan Branch is our new starter at Defensive End, and he had 23 tackles, 5 for loss with 0.5 sacks, 3 quarterback hits and a forced fumble. Biggs had 7 tackles, one for loss and a fumble recovery until he injured his kneee against MSU; he dressed, but didn't play against Northwestern and played on special teams against Indiana. I don't think he played against the Bucks. Jamison played regularly in a backup role, and contributed 9 tackles, 3 for loss including 2 sacks. Van Alstyne came back against Penn State, Iowa, Northwestern and Indiana; however, he didn't contribute much with only 5 tackles on the season. McKinney redshirts.

Defensive Line had 182 tackles (25.2% of total team tackles), 41 for loss with 12 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, 4 fumble recoveries and three pass deflections in 11 games. Our defensive line averaged giving up 136.1 net rushing yards per game per opponent; this is 4th in the Big Ten and 45th nationally.

Comments: Chris Graham had 40 tackles including three for loss, one pass break up and a fumble recovery. He had zero tackles in the Ohio State game. Our linebacking must improve for 2006 especially at this position. Look for Recruit Brandon Graham and/or John Thompson to contribute at this position in 2006. McClintock started the first game at MIKE, and had 9 tackles in four games, but didn't play again the rest of the season due to back problems. Logan saw action on special teams so he won't redshirt.

Sears, Johnny 25 WCB 3 Fr. 6'0" 180 Redshirt 4.4 34" n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Hall had 57 tackles, three for loss including two sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble, a fumble recovery for a TD and 5 pass break ups and a quarterback hit. There is no "loafing" on his part on defense. Trent is backing him up and started against MSU in a 7 back formation; he has emerged as our "nickel" back. He had 22 tackles, one for loss, one interception and four pass break ups. Trent should be our starter in 2006 at the Shortside corner. Sears and Richards redshirt although Sears played on special teams against Indiana; I don't think that will affect his redshirt status.

Comments: Mason had 79 tackles (16 in the Notre Dame game), and two for loss with 6 pass break ups, and two interceptions. He has to come up to make tackles that our linebackers should be making, but don't. Mason is one tough customer. Hood backs him up, and has contributed with 8 tackles, one for loss including two forced fumbles as a flyer on punt returns. Stewart has played very little, and only contributed 4 tackles with one pass break up.

Comments: Brandent Engelmon has 36 tackles (13 against MSU), two for loss and two sacks, two pass break ups and has recovered two fumbles. Jamar Adams contributed with 25 tackles, one for loss with two pass break ups. Anton Campbell had 8 tackles, mostly as a punt and kickoff cover.

Comments: Barringer had 34 tackles in seven games with 2 interceptions, one forced fumble and 1 pass break up. Harrison had 21 tackles, two interceptions, two pass break ups, a fumble recovery and a quarterback hit. Harrison allowed the long 61 yard run by Gary Russell that put Minnesota in position for the game winning field goal. Mundy is out for the season, and his career is in jeopardy with nerve damage. Mundy redshirts and hopefully will return in 2006.

Our pass defense was #4 in the Big Ten and #51 nationally allowed 11 touchdowns and 211.55 yards per game, and our pass efficiency defense was #3 in the Big Ten and #38 nationally. Michigan was also #3 in the Big Ten and #31 nationally in turnover margin including #23 nationally in fumble recoveries. Total Defense was ranked 38th nationally, and 3rd in the Big Ten allowing 347.64 yards per game and surrendering 19 TDs. Our scoring defense ranked 22nd nationally which ranks us 4th in the Big Ten.

Coach Jim Herrmann and defensive backs coach, Ron English, have done a magnificent job getting the most out of the talent the players possess. Don't blame the defensive backfield for giving up 300 yards against Ohio State; no pash rush and no containment of Smith was the problem. Our backs can't cover forever back there. Defensive line coach, Steve Stripling, has some work to do, but improvement has been there.

Gingell, Jason 34 PK 5 Fr. 5'9" 183 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Comments: Rivas was 19 of 25 in field goals, and 29 of 31 in extra points; he was the "goat" against the Gophers missing two second half field goals that could have given us a win, but overall he has been very good and very consistent. He was our leading scorer with 86 points in 11 games, and #10 in the nation in field goals and #43 in the nation in scoring. Bloomsburgh notched his first field goal as a Wolverine, but Lopatka has moved to the backup.

Kickoffs

Ross, Ryan 3 Kickoffs/Punter 1 Jr. 6'1" 206 Walk-on n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a
Ross Ryan did a superb job in handling kickoffs with 64 kicks for a 62.6 yard average, and 38 touchbacks and only one kick out of bounds. Rivas had one kickoff for 65 yards. Of 26 kicks returned, our opponents average 22 yards per kickoff return. The longest return was by Jakari Wallace of Minnesota.

Mesko, Zoltan 41 P 3 Fr. 6'4" 227 Recruit 4.8 n/a n/a 1200 3.9

Comments: Ryan averaged 38.8 yards on 45 punts with excellent hang time allowing our flyers, Hood and Harrison, to cover the returns. Harrison downed one punt at the MSU 2 yard line. He has produced 19 fair catches and 15 punts downed inside the 20 (34 of 45 punts unreturnable) with only one touchback which Harrison should have downed. Ohio State fielded 3 punts for minus 37 yards and two fumbles that they luckily recovered. Hood forced two fumbles as a flyer this year. Spencer had a nice 47 yarder against EMU. Rivas had one punt for 15 yards. Mesko redshirts, and be our starting punter 2006-2009!

Punt Returns
Breaston
Hall

Mason/Avant/Manningham/Dutch

Comments: Breaston had 22 attempts for 284 yards for a 12.9 yard average including a 72 yarder; Hall had 4 returns for 41 yards, Manningham had one for 17 yards and Dutch had 2 for 9 yards.

Kickoff Returns
Breaston
Mason/Tabb

Trent/Dutch/Grady/Hood/Manningham

Comments: Breaston has 19 returns for 500 yards and one TD for a 26.3 yard average. Mason has 6 returns for a 20.5 yard average; Thompson has 4 returns for 41 yards, Tabb has 2 returns for 31 yard average, Arrington got one for 15 yards and Mike Massey has one for 3 yards. Paul fielded a return against the Bucks, and Breaston recovered his fumble. I'd like to see Manningham and Bass back there. Others who may work here include Trent, Dutch or Grady.
