EPISODE: The Phantom Brigade

REVIEWED BY: The DarkSider
THE PLOT: The episode begins with Major Bludd leading an attack with the firebats on a ammunition factory somewhere in the Carpathian landscape.  Apparently the factory refused Cobra's business so this was the pay back.  General Tarbuken is the leader on the base and realizes quickly he is outnumbered.

The Joes make their way in with skystrikers led by Scarlett.  Meanwhile the ground convoy works it's way in led by Duke and Covergirl.  They quickly make a mess of Cobra knocking planes out of the air.  When they make it to the factory, Duke commands Gung Ho to stay with the Tarbuken.  Gung Ho immediately recognizes the accent which he notes is similar to Count Dracula.  The Carpathians let him know that although American scoff at their legends, many strange things happen in the mountains.  The gypsies in the area have told many tales of spirits.  Meanwhile, realizing they are outmatched the firebats turn tail and run much to the disappointment of Major Bludd.

They fly back to a dark gothic looking castle where a few guards are taking a gypsy queen to see Cobra Commander.  Major Bludd is filling in Cobra Commander on the battle loss.  Baroness leads the gypsy queen in and warns Cobra Commander of the power of the gypsy.  The gypsy queen tells them of three undead warrior spirits that can be summoned into battle by three earthly possessions which were dear to them in life.  Those possessions being;
1.) An ancient coin to bring forth a Roman warrior.
2.) A wedding ring worn by a female Mongolian warrior.
3.) A locket owned by an American WW1 fighter pilot.

Cobra Commander is pleased at the idea of an army that can not be destroyed and the gypsy queen summons them with her crystal ball.  The Mongolian and Roman arrive in the castle under a trance like state.  Cobra Commander tells them they will do his bidding which they agree to.  The third warrior, the pilot, arrives a little late and is a cheerful fellow.  However, he quickly agrees to fight for Cobra to get his locket back.

Immediately, the spirits lead an assault on the factory again.  Wild Bill recognizes the WW1 plane as rather odd.  Meanwhile, Quick Kick has a run in with the Roman warrior and Scarlett/Road Block take on the Mongolian Warrior.  The spirits prove to be hard to beat and the Joes try hard to figure out what they are.  Meanwhile, Cobra Commander watches the destruction in glee.  He boasts to Baroness that he won't need her anymore now that he has a phantom brigade.  She scoffs at this comment.

Wild Bill heads off in his chopper to take a look at the WW1 bi-plane which disappears.  GI Joe on the ground contemplate more about Cobra's new secret weapon.  Luckily for them, the shunned Baroness lends a helping hand.  She lets them know about the ghosts and their possessions that will send them packing.  She also tells Duke of the hidden Cobra base as well.

The bi-plane shows up again and Wild Bill/Cover Girl take flight after him.  Before almost getting shot out of the sky by the pilot, Wild Bill has Cover Girl hold up an American flag.  The pilot sees the flag and recognizes them as allies.  He lands and it is quickly apparent that he doesn't know he is a ghost.  The pilot is devastated to find out he is dead.  He speaks of the locket which he gave his girlfriend  before leaving to war.   After the Joes talk with him a bit, the other two ghosts show up and label him as a traitor.  They attack with a huge snow storm which is stopped when the pilot reminds them of their one-time humanity.

The Joes agree to help the spirits get back their possessions from Cobra Commander so they may rest in peace.  The Joes lead an all out assault on Cobra's castle with the help of the spirits.  Cobra gets knocked around quite a bit and the spirits arrive to confront Cobra Commander.  Cobra Commander goes hysteric and runs away from the vengeful spirits.  He runs past Gung-Ho and Duke and eventually gets confronted by a speaking skeleton.  The skeleton commands him to return the possessions and Cobra Commander is scared out of his mind by the skeleton.

The spirits are reunited with their possessions which Duke buries.  With that the spirits disappear but Wild Bill looks over his shoulder to see the spirit of the pilot flying happily with his girlfriend into the sunset.
WISHFUL COURT MARTIAL MEDAL: (most annoying character of the episode)
I award this to the WW1 pilot because although I felt bad for him, the whole "I can't be dead" thing gets on my nerves at times in story lines.

LT FALCON MEDAL FOR MILITARY INCOMPETENCE:
I here by award this medal to Quick Kick.  I never knew why the Joes need a sword wielder but what really got me is the fact he is hanging out in frigid conditions with no shirt, shoes or socks.  Good luck getting service at a Carpathian convenient store d*ckhead.

GOMER PILE MEDAL FOR BAD HUMOR:
"What, no werewolves..." Gung Ho in response to the Carpathian's stories about spirits.

COBRA SUPPORT GROUP:
(a positive approach to Cobra's f*ck ups)
Mistak
e #1  Hiring a gypsy woman to do your work is a bit stupid isn't it? Especially for three spirits that easily go turn coat on you.
Possible Solution; Next time, try a Ouji board...you should get more numbers that way.

Mistake
#2  Cobra Commander is the classic chicken before they hatch personality.  He didn't even win the battle for...of all things...an ammunition factory and he is shucking off Baroness.  Hell hath no fury more than a Cobra woman scorned I say.
Possible Solution
; Cobra Commander...perhaps the shut the f*ck up approach is in order.

Mistake
#3 Running from a skeleton is a p*ssy move isn't it?  That and the spirits need their objects so if you have them, why let them go.
Possible Solution
; Throw the skeleton to Junkyard or something.

DON'T STICK A WET FORK INTO A SOCKET MEDAL
